Distraction distress rises as texting behind wheel climbs
Washington AP reports texting while driving up 50 percent last year despite bans. About 0.9 percent of drivers text at any time in 2010, with 18 percent of drivers overall texting or emailing while driving and 50 percent among ages 21 to 24. NHTSA notes enforcement and education needed as pilot programs in Syracuse and Hartford cut device use.
