Interstate 80 reopens after styrene spill near Austintown

Interstate 80 in Mahoning County reopened about 12:25 a.m. after a tanker carrying 6,500 gallons of styrene monomer overturned causing a 15 hour closure. About 80 gallons leaked as cleanup crews contained the highly flammable chemical with help from Austintown and nearby departments.

DER plans to deny Inmetco hazardous waste permit

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources plans to deny a permit for storing hazardous wastes at International Metals Reclamation Co in Ellwood City after a technical review found incomplete information and regulatory noncompliance. Public notice will run December 12 in Ellwood City Ledger, with a 45 day comment period and a possible public hearing if requested by January 26.

Laurel board to add non voting student member

Laurel Area School Board will include a non voting student member, John Miles, a student council president, who will sit until June. Miles said the role would provide input from students and connect with board decisions, noting some actions like insurance bids are strictly business while grading policy could benefit from student input.

Amish woman, 81, drowns at farm trough fall

An 81-year-old Amish woman, Mary M. Byler, died after falling into a two-foot-deep trough in a milk house at a Wilmington Township farm yesterday around 1 p.m. Deputy Coroner Richard S. Cunningham pronounced her dead.
