Lawrence County proposes a 2012 budget totaling 90,874,740 with no property tax increase. The general fund rises 4.7 percent to 26,973,898, final adoption set for December 30 at 10 a.m. The 6.263 mill total tax includes 5.646 mills for general operations, 0.507 for debt service, and 0.11 for the library.
Lawrence County will not grant a cost-of-living increase to about 280 retirees next year and may cut the pension contribution interest rate for current employees. The retirement board, including Commissioners Steve Craig Dan Vogler and Rick DeBlasio along with Controller David Gettings and Treasurer Richard Rapone, will vote after Tuesday’s commissioners meeting. Gettings said funding the COLA would cost $1.74 million.
Welding equipment used during expansion at Jameson Hospital sparked a door fire, sending smoke into the laboratory. About 20 employees evacuated to the front lobby as New Castle firefighters arrived with three trucks. CEO Douglas Danko returned from lunch to assess the scene amid reports of sparks from welders near the new emergency and surgery areas. The door flame was extinguished quickly and smoke was contained.
New Castle considers a second proposal to buy the Cascade Center at the Riverplex for a New Castle Center for Arts and Technology. Affiliated with Manchester Bidwell Corp of Pittsburgh, the plan would replicate its training model for adults and after school programs in NaurannavuVe Castle. Dayna Lear and allies urged council, stressing community benefits while noting no organizational ties. They seek roughly 2.5 million to purchase Mill property and secure a state grant.
