Japanese officials announce troops poised to storm Nanking and expect Chinese resistance to collapse ending five months of war. The Tokyo government plans to withdraw recognition from China after Nanking’s fall as cabinet, navy, war office and foreign office prepare a formal statement. Foreign Minister Hirota briefed Emperor Hirohito on the developments.

Regular monthly meeting of the Union Township public school board was held Monday evening at the township high school on Scotland Lane. Two new members W. L. Diamond and F. A. Pinkerton took the oath of office. Karl T. Rohrer was reelected president with Stanley Augustyne as vice president. John W. Shuler attended and participated. Board discussed school business and activities for the coming year with no major items of note.
Cyrus Guildoo, 81, of Dean block Croton avenue, is reported in a death record. The notice lists residence as Croton avenue and age 81.
The U S Board of Tax Appeals exonerated the late Andrew W Mellon former secretary of the treasury of filing a fraudulent income tax return in a split decision The board said Mellon owed additional taxes for 1931 to be determined after treasury review The case stirred Republican charges of political reprisal against the Roosevelt administration involving Mellon a Pittsburgh capitalist and former ambassador to Great Britain
Congressional leaders faced a badly split farm belt bloc as urban and industrial members held power in a heated house battle over compulsory marketing quotas and penalties. An 85 to 76 vote led by Rep Coffee of Nebraska to override administration quota provisions on wheat, with final fate pending reconsideration. The Senate also weighs a voluntary control substitute by Sen Lee of Oklahoma amid a procedural path to final action.
The National Labor Relations Board reserved comment on Hartley W. Barclay editor of Mill and Factory regarding a failure to appear at hearings on charges of unfair labor tactics by Weirton Steel. Miss Earlene White of Washington D C president of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs spoke last night at The Castleton addressing 100 women at the New Castle club annual public relations banquet. Mrs Hazel Boyd presided and Miss Olivia Griffiths gave the invocation. Miss Mary Vandivort welcomed guests and noted many attendees traveled from distant cities for the event.
Barcelona dispatch reports the Spanish government claiming aerial and land victories on the eastern front as insurgents launch surprise attacks. Four insurgent planes were shot down in a mass air battle while Loyalist troops repelled rebel assaults in the Lecinosa sector and inflicted heavy losses. Government bombardments delayed a major insurgent offensive on the Aragon front and potential drives toward Almeria and Madrid were anticipated to ease northeast pressure.
Daniel B. Woolcock was reelected president at the New Castle school board organization meeting held December 6 in the administration building. Clyde M. Whittaker became vice president and Attorney William J. Moffatt was chosen solicitor. Authorities investigate a powerful explosion that wrecked the Jack and Jill Shoppe in Gloversville New York causing five deaths and injuring two others. The dead include Mildred Engle William B Christian Edward Hall Davis Stewart and Mindale Darling. Stewart and Hall were removing oil from a basement burner when the blast occurred.
In Leesburg a Sunday morning crash killed Mary Cipriano, 24, and severely burned Antoinette Cipriano, 22, both of 412 Bleakley Avenue. Parents Anthony and Mrs Cipriano and Victor Lombardo, driver of the car, were injured. Antoinette remained in serious condition at New Castle hospital with burns to face hands and much of her body. Victor Lombardo has since returned home.
Cyrus Guildoo age 81 of the Dean block died at New Castle hospital Monday night from injuries suffered Saturday evening when struck by a horse ear belonging to J M Abraham of Youngstown. He was crossing East Washington street near the old Pennsylvania station after going to a gro cer y store for milk. Coroner Orville Potter is conducting an inquiry with an inquest planned later. Guildoo leaves his wife Teresa Reinhard Guildoo and one brother.
Harry R. Bates, former WPA worker, testified before Judge J Hillary Kennan that he killed his 11 year old cousin Yallie Bates on October 6 after she screamed during his attempted sexual assault. He also admitted attempting to assault two other girls in Derry township a month earlier, one a niece, but they escaped.
Police hunt for 14 year old Gertrude Simon who disappeared after being seen near her home in Kane Pennsylvania. Frank Reed 22 accompanied her earlier and police investigate a potential runaway case while Chief P E Nelson searches for a girl Gertrude talked with earlier in the day.
Mrs. Charles A. Snyder of Crafton and her 10 month old son Charles Jr died in an icy highway collision near Crafton. Two others were hospitalized according to reports from Pittsburgh.
John W. Hall and Edward E. Glass, former securities tellers at Union National Bank of Pittsburgh, pleaded guilty to falsifying entries and defrauding clients. Each received a penitentiary term of one year and one day from Judge F. P. Schoonmaker.
