Foul weather disrupts utilities across county
Pennsylvania Power Co. linemen battled snow wind and rain to restore service for about 475 residents and 50 telephone customers as outages spread from Harlansburg to Bessemer. A 69,000 volt line near New Wilmington caused flickering lights while gloves and damp leather worsened hazards for crews. Weather also spurred deadly crashes in several states as storms dumped heavy snow across the Northeast and Midwest.

Welfare fraud rises in Lawrence County audit
An audit by the state Auditor General shows welfare fraud in Lawrence County more than doubling from five to 13 cases in two years, totaling $1,346. Discrepancies appeared in 19 percent of 425 cases, with 10 percent of medical assistance recipients deemed ineligible and Hill View Manor overcharging patients by $27,275 over July 1974 to April 1977. DPW executive director Louis Palumbo says overall county performance remains solid despite these issues.

Sunset law would auto terminate 75 Pennsylvania agencies
Harrisburg sources report House Democrats propose sunset legislation to automatically eliminate 75 state agencies unless renewed by the General Assembly. The measure targets boards and commissions including the Lottery, Milk Marketing, Real Estate, Horse Racing, Public Utility, Turnpike, and Women and Human Relations Commissions, all created by statute, with a leadership committee empowered to order quick reviews. About 20 states have adopted similar sunset laws since 1976.

United Mine Workers Begin 10th Nationwide Strike
