West Nile virus detected in New York man and spray plans
A 52-year-old Staten Island man tested positive for West Nile virus, the sixth local human case this year, while four others have recovered and an 87-year-old Brooklyn woman remains in critical condition. A Staten Island horse was euthanized after contracting the virus and two more Queens birds tested positive. Public health spray campaigns were set for Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, with Nassau County also ordering early mosquito spraying for Bethpage and surrounding areas using Scourge. Officials noted infected mosquitoes found in Bethpage State Park and near Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, as Giuliani criticized earlier spray hesitancy. An environmental group linked blue crab die-offs to last year’s Great South Bay spraying, while Long Island fishermen test samples for possible links to pesticide use.
