Anderson Indiana June 31 James Anderson of Tipton county charged with the murder of Jacob Diehl of Alexandria at Elwood two months ago has been admitted to bail his father and several other farmers near Elwood furnishing a bond of 10000 Young Anderson was indicted by the last grand jury charged with murder in the second degree.
New York June 11. A grand jury has begun an investigation into the conduct and affairs of the New York Life Insurance company.
Reports note a violent earthquake at Guayaquil Ecuador creating panic among residents. Other updates deny a Guatemala presidential assassination and cite Secretary Taft predicting no war with Japan. Also recorded are wheat condition estimates, Paris residency registration, Nagging violence in Poland, and a damaging gas explosion in Connellsville Pennsylvania that killed four.
Alice Cooper Lawson was sentenced to life in Indiana women’s prison by Judge DeHart for the murder of her husband Charles A. Lawson, a Lafayette saloon keeper, killed last September. The defense motion for a new trial was overruled and the arrest of judgment denied. Lawson offered no statement. She faces transfer to Indianapolis after a brief preparation period.

Mrs. M. Brettel secretary-treasurer of the new division of the Women’s International Union Label League has returned to Alexandria Ind after a week in Logansport. She says she will retain possession of the official records and the funds of the original body and has not surrendered jurisdiction. She plans to fight the case to the end.
A boiler at the water works and electric light plant exploded in Shelbyville Indiana on June 11 wrecking the plant and causing heavy property damage. William Ballard age twenty, engineer and fireman in charge was killed instantly. The cause remains unknown and the city will be without power until repairs are completed.
Two women, Mrs. H. H. Elliott of Van Wert Ohio and Mrs. G. W. Palmer of Madison Indiana, were assaulted by a footpad on the provement path. Elliott lost her gold glasses while Palmer lost $16 and a ring.
William Beck aged forty four was found dead in Peru Indiana with a bullet in the brain. Police believe it to be self inflicted, as he had previously attempted to take his own life. He leaves a family.
Huntington Ind June 11 William Passwater a fireman on the Chicago and Erie railroad with city headquarters was crushed to death while making a coupling in the Marion yards. Firm cables and wet weather over much of the corn belt had strengthening influences on the Chicago corn market.
Pekin reports that the direct descendant of Confucius, known as The Holy Duke Yen, has shifted to Liberal aims opposing a memorial college for Shauntung birth place. He argues for modern languages and science alongside classics in the curriculum. Count Otani of Japan visits the emperor promoting reform among Chinese Buddhists.

Leavenworth Kansas June 11 saloons of Leavenworth county closed for the first time in eighteen years following a sheriff warning backed by Attorney General Jackson. In Leavenworth city alone there had been 125 joints prior to the action.
