The Pennsylvania Scenic and Commission provides free road maps while supplies last, offering travelers a practical guide to scenic routes and local points of interest. Residents and visitors are urged to pick up maps at designated state offices and tourism centers.
John Hamilton, a 44 year old Iowa native born March 2 1892 at Fort Madison and raised in Topeka Kansas, was named chairman of the Republican National Committee. Described as red headed and dynamic he is contrasted with Democratic chairman Jim Farley. The committee includes many new faces and a revitalized executive body.
The Item Salesmanship Club report shows Werkheiser leading with Beil close behind and Heiney and Buss in third and fourth. The race tightens as last minute subscriptions determine the lineup for the home stretch with daylight possible for late movers.
A Dun & Bradstreet survey notes furniture industry revival with sharp expansion for a third year, while home furnishings spike as 1936 production reaches an estimated 448 million dollars. Steel industry utilization stands at 70 percent for the week ending June 15, up from 69.5 percent, with last year at 38.3 percent. An 83 million dollar Federal Land Bank issue is offered as 3 percent twenty year farm loans. Nazareth High School Library opens to the public July 1 from 2 to 5 PM, then every Wednesday through summer.
Nazareth Terriers under manager Heath split a two game weekend set with the Washington Generals. Saturday’s defeat came as Lefty Russell shut them down while Burk Hart pitched well for Nazareth, with nine hits allowed and 11 strikeouts. Conover of Washington made a sparkling fielding play. Sunday Nazareth rebounded to win six to one behind Dick Garter who also homered in the second inning.
George H. Welty, a prominent local man, has been chosen for the Annual National B. P. E. to be held in Los Angeles on July 1 14 15 and 16. He will travel by rail leaving July 8 with Mrs. Welty and returning July 26.
Delegates numbering thousands will attend this year’s convention with visits to Yellowstone Park Grand Canyon Hollywood and other attractions. Mr Welty, Exhausted Ruler of Easton Lodge No 121 since 1924, is linked to Nazareth Coal & Lumber Co. since 1903.
The preparatory service will be held and the Lord's Supper administered in Arndt's Church by Rev. George S. Kleckner Lutheran Pastor on Sunday June 28 at 10 15 AM.
In a capacity audience at the Nazareth High School auditorium seventy eight members of the 1936 graduating class received their diplomas. The program titled Youth's Problems Yesterday Today Tomorrow featured four honor students discussing youth issues from colonial times to today.
Nazareth Athletic Club stages a night game at Schmidt Field at 9:00 p.m. featuring the Colored House of David and Big Jim Duffy. The program blends fast play and humor to attract Nazareth fans and nearby supporters.
The Lehigh Valley Past Grands Association of 30 lodges in Northampton Lehigh and Carbon counties sponsors its 6th annual caravan to the Odd Fellows Home at Middletown nine miles east of Harrisburg. They will lead Sunday services June 26 at 2 30 P M. Members meeting at Temple 118 N 9th St Allentown at 8 00 A M travel begins 8 30 A M with police escort thru traffic.
Rotary International delegates convened in Atlantic City for an afternoon of group talks with forty camps representing diverse professions. Notable Nazareth attendees included Mr and Mrs Howard Shimer and Rev and Mrs Walter Diehl among others while Ed R Johnson of Roanoke praised Rotary’s role in fostering international friendship.
Lower Nazareth 4-H clubs in agriculture elected officers for the year at Hecktown schoolhouse. President Elwood Buss, Vice President Edna Schultz, Secretary John Fogel, Treasurer Miriam Domert. The group supports pig feeding, baby beef, potato, sweet corn and lamb feeding projects.
The week’s campaign scene grows tense with candidates focusing on victory while personal ties blur under a rush to claim the title of champion. Voters’ anxiety rises as hours count down to the final land, with credits and days left before the judges’ election results and certificates.
Rev Edward W Kortz son of Mr and Mrs William Kortz will leave Twin City for Sharon Ohio to assume the pastorate at Sharon Moravian Church succeeding Dr M F Oerter who served 50 years The 34 year veteran is noted for recent work at Bethel Va Mt Bethel Willow Mill and Crooked Oak in Southwest Virginia and as Bethlehem seminary graduate and Moravian mission faculty member in Virginia.
The Evangelical Sunday School holds its annual festival in Washington Park opposite the church. June 25th program features Naareth Band providing music. Stalls offer a variety of delicacies and food items. All are invited to attend.
The Holy Communion will be administered to the Lutheran congregation at Hecktown on Sunday at 10:00 A M by the pastor the Rev J A Klick.
Philadelphia hosts the Democratic National Convention with Mayor S Davis Wilson delivering a warm address to the delegates and citizens. He promises a comfortable stay and fulfillment of promises made to the National Committee as the city welcomes over two million residents and visitors. Continued on page seven.

Lightning struck the Prescott residence on Wind Gap Moorestown highway near Clearfield last Thursday night. Firemen arrived at 11:46 P.M., battled the blaze for thirty minutes, saved the attic floor, and returned to quarters by 1:40 A.M. Twelve men worked efficiently, with little comment, and all equipment was ready for the next call.
Sunday School begins at nine in the morning followed by Lutheran Church services at ten led by Rev. A Apple. Mary Werner of Bethlehem visited her parents Mr and Mrs John Werner and family. Mr and Mrs Charles Balliet Thomas and Carrie Log of Macada were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Stewan Miller and family. Sterling Kunkle was Saturday guest of Mr and Mrs James Eberts. Mrs Ayrus Koehler spent Sunday with Mrs George Bening.
Evelyn Messinger daughter of Mrs. singer aged 22 Sout Nazareth was quietly married at St John s Evangelical and Reformed Church with only immediate family present. The Rev Walter M officiated as the altar was decorated with palms delphiniums and fever fern. Miss Isabelle Harper played three selections Amorosa Salut d Amour Liebestraum prior to the ceremony.
The Moravian congregation celebrated its 189th anniversary with morning and afternoon services led by Rev. Paul S. Meinert. The sermon on Moravian Mission Work in Alaska was delivered by Rev. Samuel Gapp from Bethlehem. A lovefeast followed with greetings from visiting pastors including Rev. Gapp and others from Bethlehem Schoeneck West Side Easton and Minnesota.
Nazareth campaign leaders clash over the Third Count with eight days left to the final tally. Werkehiser Beil and Heiney stay close as subtracting and adding ballots shift spots, while judges prepare for the final count and prize awards on July 3rd after June 29th and June 30th balloting.
