Dr Frank Crane reflects on how childhood and past eras reveal cruelty beneath beauty. He cites tales of Little Red Riding Hood Bluebeard and Savonarola to argue empathy for others pain and the stark realities of medieval life.
The January session covered high school and Fairview buildings on January 24. A minor home accident and two automobile incidents near school yielded no serious injuries. Several staff members reported illness ranging from two to twelve days, with Miss Peters, Miss Sloat, Edith Smith, and Ott among those noted.
The Marions held a weekly Y club dinner with President Gillies in chair, a brief songfest, and Harry Shimer from the Emaus Club introduced as the speaker. He discussed Lincoln's era and government. Attendance included 85 guests. David Skillman of East Wil was listed as a guest speaker.
Nazareth School Board, with all members present, approved $876.07 in bills and reviewed finances showing January and February balances and tax receipts. The board backed an industrial management course funded by Nazareth Cement Co and hired G D Thomas as instructor, pending state approval. They also directed disinfection of contagious-books via carbon tetrachloride, studied high school program economies, and urged legislators to oppose the proposed school code and state-appropriation cuts. The resignation of librarian Miriam L Peters, effective February 17, was accepted.
Camp 315 P O of A marked its fourth anniversary with a covered dish social and a program led by chair Mary Abel. Participants included Marilyn Fley Ella Hay Anna Weaver and Marion Kahler with acts such as monologues piano violin and a playlet titled Interviewing Servant Girls. A Lutheran church service trip was announced for February 26 with a Washington party February 24 and a card party March 10.
The local Reformed congregation appointed committees for property music entertainment ushers and more. Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance company of Northampton County closed its eighty seventh year of business on December 31 1932. They paid 103356.97 in losses from fire and lightning, with 12549 policies in force and 573 new policies written. The company has enrolled 11268 members and holds 42650538 in force. The Moravian church Pastors Bible Class social committee plans a Colonial Social at the church on Tuesday at 8 00 PM. all class members invited.
The Lutheran Sunday school honored members with pins and bars for years of perfect attendance. Recipients included Lester Fehnel, Paul Kahler, Ruth Hordendorf, Arlene Kahler, Ronald Roth, and many others receiving six month to twelve year recognitions.
Nazareth High School defeated Pen Argyl in a latest contest. Social notes list visitors and callers from Bethlehem Allentown Jacksonville and Forks Township with families including the Jacoby Franta Gogel Frantz and Reeser households during the weekend.
Annual banquet by Harold W Knecht American Legion auxiliary honored War Mothers and Legionaries. J M Huffington of Pennsylvania State College will present on vegetable varieties and fertilizers at Lower Saucon Township meetings on February 17 with 4 H clubs and Little German Band providing entertainment. County agent B L Coleman arranged reels of motion pictures for rural audiences.
The Y M C A board elected Andrew Kern as president Lester Hawk as first vice president Howard Shimer as second vice president John Miller Jr as treasurer and William Harper as secretary A budget prepared by Harper was adopted Carmi Johnson of Wilsonborough spent Monday evening in town socializing with friends.
A W. C. T. U. gathering is planned for Friday evening at 7 45 in the Moravian Sunday school basement workers room to reorganize the local union. All former members and interested persons are urged to attend. Miss Mae Macken of Philadelphia will be present to discuss the work. Everyone is welcome.
Morris Fortuin, general manager of Penn Dixie Cement Corp and a well known town resident, has been a patient at Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania since February 3 for surgical treatment. He underwent an operation last Wednesday for ulcers and is gradually recovering. friends wish him a speedy recovery.
An editorial reflects on a prolonged economic lull of over three years with men from all occupations hoping for a resurgence of easy money in speculation real estate banking and consumption. It warns that recovery will rely on hard work and sweat and recalls past panics while urging timely effort to lay the foundations for future prosperity.
The 23rd anniversary of the Boy Scout movement will be observed with special services at St John’s Reformed Church Sunday evening. The Hoover award for increased troop attendance and membership will be presented by an area council executive. Patriotism will be stressed honoring Lincoln and Washington. Rev Diehl will deliver a message. Girl Scouts and Camp-Fire Girls have been invited to attend.
Nazareth Rod and Gun Club will hold an open meeting at the Y on Monday February 20 at 8 p.m. All interested in sports are welcome. The program includes moving pictures and lectures by speakers, including Mr Trimbly of Lehigh University Bethlehem and Mr Sawyer on snakes with live specimens. No admission charge.

The Men's League at St John’s Reformed Church plans a Tuesday meeting on February 21 featuring a Mock Trial. Rev Walter H Diehl faces a serious charge with an indictment. Judge Wallace H Wotring will preside, with Stanley J Fehr for the prosecution and George A Grim as defense counsel. Bail is posted for the defendant, Sheriff Roy Kostenbader noted. A crowded docket and jury selection challenges are anticipated.
Troop 32 met at the YMCA with Elmer Snyder in charge. Awards were given after contests, with brief talks on future citizenship by William Henry, Donald Detweiler, and Earl Ritter, plus a cornet solo by Joseph Schlegel and a Rev Diehl address on Lincoln and reverence. Committeemen noted flag stands and a cedar chest being built for troop use. Next meeting features a whittling contest and a scout knife presentation by D Detweller. Troop 79 met at St. John's Lutheran with John Rader leading. Flag ceremony included Wilbur Hordendorf and Russell Rohn. A drill, Lord's Prayer, dues, then camp fire at Black Rock woods. Four new candidates joined: John and Frank Croller, Charles Nicholas Jr., and Anton Powell. The motto and blessing by Victor Auman closed the session.

The Nazareth Woman's Club met in the High School building with Mrs. William J. Happel presiding. The dramatic committee led the program with group and solo dancing by Jacquelyn Andrews and others under Miss Una Houston. a one act comedy Please Do Not Pick the Flowers was performed. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Trinkley, Eva Trinkley, and others in town.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Mack and William Milchsack hosted friends at the Milchsack home for Mr and Mrs William Mertz of town who recently announced their marriage. Guests played 600 then enjoyed luncheon. The decor featured hearts and candles, with a cake showing a bride and groom centerpiece. Prizes went to Mr Jones Mr Roth Mrs Achenbach and Mrs Mertz.
Troop 1 girl scouts met Thursday evening at the Moravian church for an investiture ceremony. Tenderfoot pins were distributed to Peggy Smith Hermina Kametler Evelyn Daniels Virginia Daniels and others completed second class and Tenderfoot work. A Washington Birthday hike was planned and a special meeting with mothers invited.
