An essay by Dr Frank Crane advises parents to train children to speak slowly and clearly. A low, measured voice signals confidence, discipline, and culture, while a high voice implies weakness. He urges waiting to speak, enunciating every consonant, and avoiding mumble or ums to project authority and gentility.
The Girls Missionary Guild of the Reformed church met in church social rooms with 20 members. Evelyn Messinger read the scripture and led prayer. Discussions on mission outlook included several members. A business session elected officers, and plans for a May 5 Prosperity Social were announced. Gifts were given to Miss Ellen Ruloff and Mrs. Kenneth Houck. An egg hunt, hospitality refreshments, and social hour followed.
The Women’s Missionary Society of St John’s Reformed met Tuesday in regular session led by President Mrs Charles Shafer. Lesson titled China Missions, discussions included Mrs Robert Nolf and Miss Alice Knauss. Officers installed by Mrs Eyer included Shafer as President Diehl as first vice president Wotring as second vice president Knauss as bank offering secretary Kraemer pianist Brong assistant pianist Leopold Girls’ Missionary Guild leader Nolf literature secretary Searles temperance secretary Fife members secretary Wotring. Rev W H Wotring improving in Northampton Hall’s hospital and expected to return home soon.
The Knights and Ladies of the Golden Eagle announce the Annual State Session to be held in Easton May 9 10 11 with headquarters at Hotel Easton. A program includes a banquet for representatives and families a public meeting a parade and sessions of temples and castles and installation of officers across May 9 to May 12.
The Lehigh Valley Weight Lifting Championship will be held at the YMCA gym in town on Saturday evening May 6 at 8 PM with awards for champions in 118, 128, 140, 154, 168, and 182 pound classes. The event features lifts, feats by the Milo Trio, fancy club swinging, and a dramatic chest rock break by Charles Durner.
Mrs Lester Hawk entertained guests at her Belvidere street home on Tuesday afternoon for luncheon and bridge. Attendees included Mrs Clifford Taylor Mrs Joseph Heintzelman Mrs Spencer Reph Mrs William Santee Mrs John Winn Mrs Frank Messinger and others from town along with Mrs B F Miller of Bangor and Mrs H C Miller of Bloomsburg Prizes went to Mrs Heintzelman Mrs Winn and Mrs Santee. The Spring Convention of the Allentown Lutheran Conference will meet May 2 at St John’s Coplay with sessions in morning afternoon and evening Sylvester Huberts will represent St John’s Coplay.
Mrs Laura Hellick 62 of Smoketown was admitted to Easton Hospital after being struck by a truck on Saturday afternoon along the Newburg Easton road. She suffered a severe scalp laceration and bruises but no broken bones. The truck driven by Charles Beers Bristol Park was reportedly moving slowly as she crossed homeward after shopping from a baker’s truck. Easton Hospital ambulance and State police patrolman are investigating.
The senior class at our local high school presents the three act comedy Green Stockings with Margaret Anglin noted for charm. Rehearsals proceed under Miss Nicholas I with Betty Earle May belle Happel Virginia Shankweiler Barbara Troxell Catherine Sieg fried Herbert Haas Walter Pusher and others in the cast. Tickets for the May 16 8:00 P M performance in the high school auditorium are sold by class members Albert Schieri Hilda Kellow Maria Marx Martha Muschlitz or other class members. Posters by the art department will provide event information.
The Vigilance Hose company meets in adjourned session Monday at 8 pm to review a report by a special committee on plans for a Four County Firemen parade at Summit Hill on June 16. Committee members are H H Cooley Frank M arks and Michael Masters, appointed at the last meeting. Frank Simons will represent the Company and William Miller the Relief Association at the June and October 1933 conventions.
Mr and Mrs George Kramer of Wind Gap celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Friday April 21. Relatives and friends gathered for a sumptuous supper with extensive gifts. They are parents of five sons and one daughter. Several others, including Daniel Siegfried Mary Repsher and Walter Schurer, marked birthday anniversaries, and Dorothy Bauer celebrated her 13th birthday.
Mrs Myrtle Shoop of Mauch Chunk presided at Shafer's Hall Nazareth joint meeting of Lehigh Valley Sons of Veterans and Auxiliary. Maynard Huber opened business and devotional duties were led by Mrs Bertle Horlacher. Next Lehigh Valley Sons Association gathering set for Hellertown May 1 with delegates from multiple camps.
Starting Sunday April 30 at 2 AM and ending Saturday September 30 at 2 AM this time will be observed by the industries the churches and the schools be governed accordingly
Heilman Boiler works and Lehigh Fan and Blower in Allentown increased staff from five to sixty as new equipment arrives. Three giant fans for Fulmer dehydrator at Cetronia farm, Gen Harry C. Trexler’s project, include two ten foot exhauster fans and a largest eleven foot centrifugal blower with an eight foot rotor and 7000 pound weight. May 15 operation expected. Gen Trexler favored home industries to spur local activity.
Patchwork quilts fascinate women along with the jig-saw craze as Mrs Peter Stoudt designs a quilt assisted by War Mothers Chapter members. The piece will be raffled Friday May 12 for War Mothers benefits, with the Chapter meeting scheduled for Friday evening to address urgent business.
Knights and Ladies of the Golden Eagle district association met in Northampton county with Nazareth hosts. Robert Kindt presided as district president. officers from Easton attended. Next meeting set for Bridgeton Pa in July. Nazareth Temple 10 won traveling gavel for best representation. Entertainment by Bauer siblings. meeting ended with Bless Be the Tie That Binds and social hour.
Nazareth Pennsylvania school board convened in Nazareth High School on April 19 1933 to fix 1933 34 teacher salaries at 15 percent below 1931 32 rates in line with the 1933 legislature and school code. Board members Martin Kern Bennett Ziegler Hawk Leh voted yes except Ziegler. Meeting adjourned 12 20 AM. Secretary J Knauss.
Nazareth opened the local baseball season at Nazareth Hall with about 600 fans as Chief Burgess J. H. Fulmer threw out the first ball and the Nazareth Band played during the flag raising. Hartman allowed 10 strikeouts as Nazareth dropped the opener 13 to 5 to the Northampton Buffaloes, who built early leads with two runs in the first, two in the second, and four in the fourth. Heath hit the season’s first extra base for Nazareth with a two-bagger.
The Schoeneck Moravian church held its annual reception with a large audience. Rev. J. F. Gross welcomed attendees before a program including Virginia Clewell singing, William Rundle on tenor, a vocal duet by Mrs. Eugene Trein and Rundle, readings by Mrs. Eugene Trein, F. R. Schramm’s bass, and PF. R. Schramm’s talk. King's Daughters circle supervised refreshments during the social period.
Herman Frederick Ziegler 75 died at his Bla Main Street home on April 23 at 7 am after a heart attack. Born December 18, 1857 in Nazareth, he was a respected borough figure. He trained as a painter, ran a restaurant, managed the Commercial House, and held various business roles in real estate, insurance, and liquor. He married Sarah Ellen Smith in 1890 and was active in local politics.
Joseph Schlegel longtime Nazareth resident and businessman dies aged about the late 80s to 90s. He served as bank director Nazareth Hardware Company director organizer 1908 Nazareth and Loan Association director and bank official. Survived by widow Ellen two daughters and sister. Funeral services held at home and Nazareth Moravian church with interment at Hope Cemetery Hecktown. Pallbearers named Charles Bentz and others.
About 250 members of St John’s Lutheran church gathered for a reception honoring confirmands and new members. Rev H C Snyder opened, Elwood Unangst led greetings for the council, with remarks from Sunday school Marry Happel and others. Mrs Ralph Fry coordinated the program with readings, vocal selections, and a social hour.
