During a Monday session the board discussed a non-disclosure agreement for press access to executive session items. The board approved the agreement and resolved to keep discussions and documents related to two agenda items confidential. Additional actions included league changes, budget timing, payroll services, and a resignation.
Coos County commissioners approve Phase I continuation of the North Bend County Annex project. Irene Johnson replaces ousted Lonnie Van Elsberg on the Coos Bay Wagon Road Reappraisal Committee and is appointed by Chairman Woody Robison. Johnson vowed swift action and plans weekly meetings to hear public input while Sheriff Les Miller remains Emergency Services director.
OSU funds a two year project led by Davidt DeCalesta to document predator kills with photos and neutral verification. He visited Coos County to scope the problem and gather input as two field agents begin work in western and eastern Oregon starting December, funded by an $80 000 grant.
Myrtle Point chapter of American Field Service introduces the Domestic Program letting local students live in another U S area for one semester while a visiting student from elsewhere attends Myrtle Point High School. No member limit. host homes must match participant numbers.
Oregon's new law allows disabled veterans to register or renew a vehicle without the usual fee starting Sept 13. Applicants must prove disability under the state motor vehicle law and show active service of at least 90 days unless cut short by service related injury. A free tag applies only if no other household vehicle holds a disabled veteran registration.
In the Myrtle Point area precincts, voters strongly supported recalling former commissioners Loanie Van Eleberg and Mickey Moffitt in the September 16 election. Lee Valley reported 97 percent for recall of Moffitt and Van Eleberg, Powers showed 96 percent for recall, and Dora precinct recorded the heaviest support with full ballots in favor of the recall. Breadtent also reported 100 percent yes votes for recall.
About 2000 Oregon women veterans who left service since February 1 1966 may receive roughly 20 a month for each GI Bill period between June 1 1966 and October 24 1973 if they were married then. Claims must be filed at a VA regional office by July 1 1976 with proof of marriage. overall eligibility is retroactive to June 1 1986.
Sophomore Dana Vanderhoef was burned Tuesday when mixing potassium and sulfur and heating the mixture. A test tube exploded, her shirt caught fire, and she suffered neck and wrist burns with singed hair. Teacher Cindy Elliott provided first aid and advised medical evaluation.
Southern Oregon State College outlines New Student Week and fall quarter registration dates. Day classes start Sept 25 with evening classes Sept 29, pre-registration ends Sept 23 for current students, regular registration Sept 24 to 28, and new students begin activities Sept 21. An ACT or SAT test is required for entering freshmen with a $10 testing fee.
Judge Frederick Denniston recommended removing the M-44 predator control device after EPA approval. This repeal affects Oregon and Douglas County programs, with continued battles over the broader predator control policy and remaining banned poisons strychnine and 1080.
A Brethren pastor resigned after Sunday services at Myrtle Pete church following his sermon. The event occurred on a September Sunday and marked his last public appearance at the congregation.
July 1975 softwood log exports from Washington Oregon northern California and Alaska totaled 253.3 million board feet down five percent from June 1976. Japan received 236.4 million board feet or 93.3 percent of July exports with Douglas fir leading at 39.9 percent and Port Orford cedar at 0.9 percent.
The 1975 76 Make It Your Self With Wool contest opens to eligible gifts and toys. District No 7 hosts the November 8 event at The Wheel House Banquet Room Chandler Hotel Coos Bay with junior 14 16 and senior 17 21 divisions. Representatives from the Oregon State System of Higher Education will visit Myrtle Point High School on Tuesday October 7 1978 at 9 30 p m to present course offerings admission requirements housing costs financial aid and scholarships for students and parents. Press attendance is noted.
Irene Johnson of Coos Bay was appointed by Gov Straub to the three member board joining Woodrow Robison. Eddie Waldrop former Bandon mayor also named to the panel completing the trio. Johnson as first woman on the 122 year old board and Waldrop as first Bandon representative since 1940s.
