Oregon Department of Agriculture raises initial brand recording fee from 10 to 25 dollars starting October 1 1975 and keeps rerecording at 10 dollars under a September 5 order after August 5 1975 notice. Horse brand inspection climbs to 1 dollar per head and special certificate remains 2 dollars.
The Coos County assessors released 1975 76 tax rates with Myrtle Point area code 41 rising to 29.71 driven by school district 41 climbing from 7.24 to 8.89. City of Myrtle Point up to 13.87, County and IED down in parts, SWOCC 1.11, Port of Coquille 0.07, with ad valorem payments per thousand of assessed value.
A special session votes to repeal HB 2579 which had barred media from naming individuals involved in criminal cases and restricted crime reporting. The repeal restores public access to criminal records and reverts to rules in force before last Friday.
The United Way Fall Campaign opened this week with a kickoff at the Birdcage restaurant in Coquille. Ross Pinkley led as south county campaign chair, assisted by Robert Trigg and Clifford Shaw. Volunteers from United Way agencies attended, including Al Martin heading senior citizens outreach, Gary Curzon from Myrtle Point Recovery House, Jill Chapel for Boy Scouts, and childcare center volunteers from Bandon and Myrtle Point.
Public notice lists Myrtle Point City Library Board meetings at 4 p.m. on Tuesdays before the month’s last Friday at Flora M. Laird Memorial Library. Myrtle Point District 1 School Board holds regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in the Mowmys school administration building 212 Spruce Mt.
Bandon plans its Cranberry Festival from September 1 to 21 with the Cranberry Fair opening Friday at the Barn in the city park. The Queen’s coronation and stage show occur at 8 p.m. in the high school gym. The main events Saturday include a Grand Parade at 10 a.m. and a football game at 1 20 p.m. A 4 H horse show is at 1 p.m. in the park preceding the ball game. Three dances and rog sled races on the jetty at low tide around 6 p.m. on Sunday complete the weekend.
Gene Holt receives promotion to Vice-president at Security Bank of Coos County announced by bank president Chuck Brummell. Holt a 16 year veteran joined in 1973 as assistant vice-president after earning a Finance BS and MBA from the University of Oregon. He previously taught college finance and worked as a National Bank examiner for the Comptroller of the Currency. Security Bank, founded 1919, operates three branches as the region’s largest bank in the Coquille Valley.
At a special Sept 1 meeting Southwestern Oregon Community College board heard a first phase construction proposal from President Jack Brookins based on the master plan. The tentative price tag is 8 million and covers most plan elements including new power and water services a vocational education facility shops and facilities a 300 seat theatre TV studio music facilities and an all weather track. The board will revisit construction priorities and financing at the Sept 15 regular meeting. Several bids were accepted for equipment and installations including television gear welding machines a sound system study carrels and other items for the new business division instructional program.
Principal Ray Hajduk announces an open house on September 24 at Myrtle Crest to explain new facilities and programs. A coffee hour follows on October 2 at 9:15 a.m. in the Media Center with Hajduk and Vice Principal Bud Bick.
MP Chamber of Commerce hear speaker R C Geaney of the Port of Coquille outline plans for a new boat ramp with river access near the Spruce Street Bridge and invite citizen input. A resolution backing the project was adopted. The group discussed improving the Cooper Bridge access and DEG variances for reopening the Coquille solid waste site and continuing the MP and Powers site.
Broadbent Elementary started its Bi-Centennial year with a costume day last Friday. Girls and female staff wore pioneer era dresses while boys wore old hats. The school plans year long activities to preserve the Bi-Centennial heritage.
unofficial results from a special recall election show Moffitt Van Elsberg trailing with 8 291 yes recalls to 6 190 no while Van Elsberg leads at 6 029 to 4 153, with further decisions awaited. Governor and court records indicate a final decision pending after Thursday briefings.
Coos Bay kicks off its first Bay Area Fun Festival September 25 to 28 with a Giant Fireworks display on September 27 at 9:00 PM along the waterfront. The Eastside Fire Department sponsors the hour long show. Other events include queen pageants, talent shows, a seafood feed, marching parade, street fairs, square dances, and a rodeo style hunt event at Pony Village. Visitors from across the state are expected.
Warner Cable attended the Monday city council meeting announcing a new channel A with weather public service and FM music by October 15. Repairs on a Maple Street trunk line will be completed soon and dial positions will shift. Councilman Wooley cited poor picture quality but the rep will monitor and report back. Ruth Ellen Gassman reported the library added 1019 books to reach 14 687 total and that nearly 19 000 adult books circulated last year with only 12 lost. City Attorney Mel Drum noted state law limits library board service to eight years per person.
The final edition of the fall term class schedule for Southwestern Oregon Community College has been mailed to town holders and is available at public libraries in Coos Bay Sixes Bend Reedsport and Bandon. Interested persons may call at the college to obtain schedules. Terms for council elections and tennis court project updates are noted.
Dorwin Lovell resigns from Myrtle Point High School to take a placement role at Southwest Oregon Community College. Lovell and other council members plan adjustments as Myrtie Point considers staff reassignments and ongoing city governance.
