Remembering country schools in Coos County history
In Coos County the country school era began with scattered classrooms along creeks and two schools serving upper and lower creek communities. The piece recalls Esther Lockhart teaching in 1964 and Broadbent’s first school building in 1967, with early teachers like Florence Sumerlin and Ida Cording sharing 1900s certification methods, wages, and hardships. It notes shifts due to transportation and consolidation ending the era, and preserves vivid memories of old log schools and rural teaching life.
