Mrs. Alice Warne 34 of Myrtle Point and Lester Nelson 12 of Ridgefield died when a car driven by Arthur Nelson 22 collided with a mute near Vancouver Washington. Arthur Nelson is held on negligent homicide charges.
Hugh A. Brown of Myrtle Point Oregon 1st Infantry regiment seized a rocket launcher during an enemy attack and moved near a disabled tank forcing the crew out. He and his platoon then killed three crew members and wounded two. Brown later disabled another tank and the remaining tanks withdrew. Mr and Mrs Robert Belloni visited Eugene from their home for a week before fall term at the University of Oregon where Belloni is a law student.
The Myrtle Point FFA Dairy judging team Bill Davenport Donald Petersen and Rodney Dalton placed fifth in the State FFA Dairy Judging Contest at the Oregon State Fair on September 9 Teams from 47 schools competed in Jerseys Guernseys and Holsteins. Davenport won 2nd place individual with 30.6 points and received a Holstein club medal Petersen earned 8th place and a 4th place Guernsey ribbon. Estacada won with 14812 points and will advance to the National Dairy Judging Contest at Waterloo Iowa October 2 1950.
Veterans operating or working on farms may enroll in Monday evening classes at Myrtle Point High School in the agricultural building. Training covers farm machinery repair, welding, sheet metal, blacksmithing, carpentry, dairying, pastures, soils, and bookkeeping. Sign up by Oct 1 to begin Nov 1, with three entry dates yearly. Public Law 346 limits entries after July 1, 1951. Contact Mr Kirsch or Mr Goddard for details.
Twelve 1950 graduates of Myrtle Point High leave for college. Willamette University at Salem and University of Oregon at Eugene attract many seniors. Names include Glenn Zeller and Rick Bingham heading to Willamette. Floydce Worsham and Laura Shelton to Oregon. Ralph Clarme and Marlene Gasner to Oregon State College. Marvin Hammack to Oregon Technical School. Pat Waterman to nursing at Eastern Oregon College. Scholarships aid financing.
The Junior Women's Club at Myrtle Point will sponsor a kindergarten for the 1951 52 school year. Parents should contact Avona Noyes or Louise McDonald by September 20. The monthly fee is 10 dollars per child and kindergarten will begin around October 15.
Major General Thomas E Rilea, state director of the selective service for Oregon, announced the November induction quota. He said 620 men must be inducted that month, about 50 percent more than September or October. Oregon inducted 452 in September and 453 in October.
Coquille Valley Country Club routed Bandon 24 to 9 in a Sunday golf outing drawing many players from both towns. Individual scores list Chet Murray Lou D Felsheim and Warren Albertson among top finishers. Ladies Day planned for Sept 6 with Nona Patrick winning blind bogey prize. Buck Elliott volunteers to improve marsh near hole 7 turning it into a water hazard and resource.
L H Gregory of Oregonias tells Legion Post No 36 banquet that travel across the country shows sports bind communities as baseball and football unite neighbors. He says baseball sharpens coordination and quick thinking, citing four seconds for most plays. Junior players note pitching a curved ball as trophies are awarded to two outstanding club players.
The September meeting of the Cees Curry Pioneer and Historical association, held in the Coquille Community building, featured progress reports on history and plans for a permanent museum. Attendees included John D Carl and Mrs Ralph Stephens with several members from Coquille and nearby towns. The next meeting is set for October 7 at the museum with lunch served by Mrs Stephens.
Enroute to the Far East Marine Sergeant Harry L. Warden of Myrtle Point Oregon sits aboard a naval vessel bound for Korea. A fire team leader with a Marine unit he graduated from San Diego high school and enlisted in January 1946.
In a pre school meet teachers heard Mr Moore discuss his Europe trip studying the Marshall Plan. The Dutch system and American education were contrasted with focus on fundamentals, memorization, and youth development by Dr W Sherburne. Dorothy Gerrard and Dorothy Holmberg spoke on the symposium Relationship Between School and the Health Department as a substitute for Dr Gutman.
Senator Malone criticizes Point 4 as a costly, ill conceived program. He cites estimates of 350 thousand million dollars over 50 years and argues U S taxpayers would back private investment losses abroad. He calls for private funding and fair policies rather than large government guarantees.
The Bobcats prepare for their first home game of the season against Toledo on Friday. Coach Curt Beskhamski says the team is in better form, with Jim Krantz recovering from a knee bruise and Dick Briggs and Glen Farring back in action. The Toledo squad features a 280 pound tackle, and a new grandstand is ready as a good crowd is expected. Jr Varsity from/Bandon will face Myrtier Point Varsity here Saturday.
Oregon law requires all vehicles to stop for a school bus loading or unloading. About 100000 children ride buses statewide and by next May travel will total about ten million miles. Police reported 250 arrests for violations in the 1949 50 year as a caution.
The Quarterback club will hold its first season meeting as a breakfast Friday September 18 at 7 30 am in the Myrtle Hotel banquet room. Guests of honor are Myrtle Point High School coaches Bunnell Beckham and Rineerson, announced toastmaster Ritchie Francis.
Reserve season tickets go on sale at the high school during school hours on Wednesday. General admission is 50 cents per game, 1 for adults, 50 cents for students with body cards, and 25 cents for grade school students. Gates open at 3 p.m. for the ball game if any tickets remain.
Coos County hosts a college football clash between Lewis & Clark College of Portland and Southern Oregon College in Ashland to benefit the Shrine Children's Hospital. The Sept 23 game in Coos Bay raises funds for infantile paralysis recovery, sponsored by the Coos County Shrine Club with tickets at Schroeder's.
Thirty artificially bred dairy heifers from 20 herds will be offered by Marion County Dairy Breeders at the state fair grounds Salem on September 28. Purebreds and grades included. ages range from two months to two years. Consignments include 121 Jerseys 14 Guernseys and four Holsteins with sires having dams yielding over 860 pounds butterfat.
Mrs. Ted Green of Broadbent brought in an egg that measured 944 by 64 inches. Inside the shell were three yolks and another normal egg. The hen reportedly shows no illness and the oversized egg will be displayed in the Herald Press window for a few days.
A large crowd from Coos Bay Bandon Coquille Myrtle Point attended the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs picnic at Norway Grove on Sunday September 10. A noon potluck lunch featured ice cream pop and coffee. Myrtle Point narrowly beat Coquille in a softball game while children enjoyed races games and prizes. The event aims to become an annual tradition.
