The Soviet statement said President Kennedy's request for 150000 reservists was provocative and denied building a Ze 1 base in Cuba while asserting powerful rockets and nuclear warheads are stationed there.

A second concert is planned for Coquille Wednesday September 19 at 8 p.m. free and open to all, sponsored by Coquille Valley Concert Association.
Oregon small business owners can obtain SBA backed funding with banks providing the remainder. Under the plan SBA advances up to 80 000 dollars on a sample 100 000 loan for ten years while the bank holds the rest and handles first five maturities. Portland SBA branch manager John G Barnett says the scheme blends government financing with private banking credit judgment to expand loans and create jobs.
Mrs William Gasemen president of the high school Parent Teacher Student organization announced an important meeting for Tuesday September 18 at 8 p m in the high school cafeteria. She urged all parents of students to attend.
West Coast Telephone will initiate direct dialing in the Myrtle Point exchange at 11 01 p m Saturday. The upgrade includes new numbers a remodeled office building a new directory and revamped long distance facilities. Approximately 1600 phones will receive the 572 prefix and direct dialing instructions will be published. Long distance processing shifts to Coos Bay center with some jobs cut at Myrtle Point and Coquille while transfers are offered.
Curtis Beckham files a nominating petition to put Bill Knife on the November 6 ballot. Knife, a Myrtle Point resident for 16 years, runs Knife Bros. Jewelers with his brother for 10 years and serves on the city budget committee. He is married with two sons and active in Lions Club and the chamber of commerce.
The planning commission, after a summer recess, assigns Bob Hogan and LeRoy Robinson to present tentative re zoning plans for Myrtle Point commercial and industrial districts. The rezoning may take a year and follows a Bureau of Municipal Research study The commission will hold hearings and inform service clubs before a final city recommendation.
The Myrtle Point high school football schedule opens with a varsity game on September 14 against Myrtle Creek. The JUNIOR VARSITY slate lists games from September 20 to October 25 at various locations with multiple opponents including Powers Coquille North Bend and Benden.
Coos County Clerk Georgia Vaughan urges voter registration for the November general election. The office will open Saturday October 6 from 8 AM to 8 PM for voter registration in addition to regular hours. Absent ballot applications are available and can be requested by mail phone or in person.
The third and final free Sabin oral polio vaccine clinics will be Sunday 11 am to 6 pm at Myrtle Crest school Myrtle Point and Powers grade school Powers. The sugar cube vaccine is given for a small fee and aims to protect against polio. Registration blanks are urged from local drug stores for each family member.
