Wool Pool Raises Prices for Southwest Oregon Sheep
About 29 sheep growers from two counties ship wool from over 10,000 sheep into the annual pool formed to boost earnings. This year fleece wool brings 50 cents and lambs wool 45 cents, above other buyers, per Geaney. The pool began in 1872 to improve prices. in 1873 members sold fleece at 91 cents and lambs wool at 8 cents. The global market has since fallen, with recent prices well under 50 cents. Additional pool members include Waterman and other named locals.

Department of Forestry Entomologist LeRoy Kline notes an epidemic of berk beetles plus flathead and round head wood borers endangering trees. Harsh 1972 73 conditions stress trees making them vulnerable to attack as larvae tunnel under bark and attack cambium. A field study is planned by the Department in October.
