A humorous diary voice recalls turning forty on September 4 with a familiar breakfast, a morning reflection in the mirror, and a family birthday scene. The narrator jokes about aging, presents, and choices like a new car and better lighting as the day unfolds.
Coos County Chamber of Commerce forms a long range highway group led by George Burr and James W. Harrison to advocate for Highway 42 as part of Winnemucca to the Sea. First meeting set for September 5 at the courthouse with tours by the BLM on Sept 11 and 12 and a planning session in Coos Bay.
The Pacific coast will host the first international trade fair in June as part of the Oregon centennial exposition in Portland. Thirty five countries expected. Great Britain Norway Finland Netherlands Belgium France West Germany and Italy among exhibitors. An audience of 28 million in the region plus 6 to 8 million overall is projected with buyers given morning access. Continued on Page Six.

William Long of Salem receives Arthur J. Priest award the fraternity’s top individual honor at the Phi Delta Theta biennial convention in Asheville North Carolina He earns a $500 scholarship and is noted for his Willamette grades and athletics including Little All American football honors.
Kay Yockey of Bandon 4-H topped all electricity exhibits with an empire meter and earns a scholarship to Oregon State college summer school next June. She also won ribbons for a home loom exhibit and photography plus a sewing entry. Other county exhibitors earned blue red and white ribbons in electricity entomology meals and more at the state fair in Coos Bay and North Bend venues.
Announcement from Broadbent Community Church states Rev Troy Costlow of Glendale, Crlit, will open a series of evangelistic services starting Monday Sept 15 and continuing through Sunday Sept 28. Services are at 730 each evening except Saturdays. public invited. Rev Witham Mai is the Broadbent pastor.
The Coos Curry Pioneer and Historical Association holds its September meeting at the museum in North Bend on Saturday September 13. Myrtle Point and Coquille women will serve cake and refreshments, with volunteers from the bus area providing the snacks. All interested in the museum are invited. A Langlois meeting date has been postponed.
The Coos County group plans a Friday 11 30 a m visit to the State Highway Commission in Salem to press for Highway 42 improvements. County Judge James Harris leads the effort with representatives from Port of Coos Bay and local chambers and Homemakers for 42. The new Coos County Committee for the Improvement of Highway 42 will meet monthly after formation.
Harold Watzling plans to reopen the Western Auto store at 530 Sprucest, with Herb Darnell and crew installing fixtures and stocking new merchandise ahead of a grand opening scheduled for late this month. Watzling, former owner, will return next week to operate the new store as proprietor.
Myrtle Point Union High School reports a new opening day total of 405 students, surpassing 400 for the first time. Freshmen 54 girls 67 boys. Sophomores 60 girls 64 boys. Juniors 60 girls 46 boys. Seniors 29 girls 35 boys. Foreign language enrollment includes 15 in German 31 in French and 32 in Spanish.
Mary Ellen Davenport and Ted Schaefer won second high as a dairy judging demonstration team at the state fair. Kathy Spires and Margaret Davenport earned a white ribbon in 4-H livestock demonstration. They were accompanied by leader Mrs LC Davenport and joined by Joan Davenport Jerene Davenport and Gary Larsen on Friday and Saturday.
Myrtle Point schools report fall enrollment of 770, up from 726 last year and above the 750 forecast. The first to third grades show the largest gains with 110, 104, and 113 students, while fifth, seventh, and eighth grades mark slight declines. The combined tax levy for District No 410 and High School drops to 645 mills from 697.
The Fall Golf Championship at Caquille Country Club enters its second week with pairings announced. Over the past week Clayton Mast and Bob Mast led wins in the Championship and Second Flight, while young players showed pressure handling as Rob Getchell and Jim Thomas faced strong opponents.
Myrtle Point Planning Commission approved a five zone plan heavy and light industrial commercial neighborhood and residential and will forward it to the city council for study A public hearing will be held later for citizen input A future park and recreational area for residents and summer tourists was urged with a committee named to study possible sites.
At the Oregon State Fair the Century Farm program recognized 315 farming families from 15 counties. Governor Holmes presented engraved diplomas. oldest farmer award went to 97 year old Mrs Anos Wilkins of Eugene, with the Molson family receiving the oldest farm honor.
Oregon drivers faced more than 13 000 traffic law convictions in August per the Department of Motor Vehicles. Suspensions totaled 767, with a record 182 for excessive violations or accidents. Other suspensions cited intoxication 268, suspended license 83, reckless driving 62, basic rule violations 48, hit and run 4, fatal accident 8, medical or physical conditions 7, failure to appear 16, and failed tests 15.
Bobcats begin football season at home Friday hosting the Myrtle Creek Vikings in a 195A opener. Coach Owens signals a scrappy, hard hitting unit with several players contending for starting spots. Possible lineup includes Knowlton, Watson at end, the Brodie brothers at tackle, Thomas, Gary, Lancaster at guard, Wagner at center, Thomas and Mast at quarterback, Hale, Daniels at halfback, and Loren at fullback.
