Chamber protests lack of notice for scenic area hearing
The chamber of commerce protested a public hearing by the Oregon Scenic Area board held without proper notice. Officials from Myrtle Point to Winston and Coquille to Bandon faced designation discussions, with 11 members attending and the council noting many highway signs lack permits or proper maintenance. The board will decide within 60 days. if designated, signs must be removed within seven years.

Log Jam Cooperation Aims to Clear Middle Creek Blockage
County Commissioners J J Geaney and Charles Mahaffy of the Bureau of Land Management along with Ron Smith of the Cees Forest Patrol said they will work to burn a massive log jam on Middle Creek above the Breuer place, weather permitting. The jam, about 400 yards long, could block the stream and hinder fall salmon migrations to the fish ladder. They hope the state fish commission and game commission will join the effort.

Incendiary Fires Burn Across Coos and Curry Regions
A 500 acre fire on Randle man Creek near Bandon, out of control by Monday due to 40 mph winds, was believed started as a set fire and contained by Wednesday. A 400 acre Poverty Ridge blaze, incendiary in origin, was subdued with 50 men assisting. Another 200 acre fire between Sixes and Elk Rivers, Curry County, burned slash and timber before Monday control. several houses were threatened. About 900 acres of grazing land burned by ranchers who controlled them.

Morris Wins Elks Golf Championship at Coquille
Gary Morris of Coquille captures the annual State Elks golf championship at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club over Labor Day weekend with 56 players.
