Don Aasen of Coquille won the First Annual Elks State Golf Tournament at Coquille Valley Golf & Country Club over Labor Day weekend. He defeated top competitors including Erv Dettman and Jack McClarrin to claim the title after a 36 hole final against Dr George Chapman of Coos Bay. Forty eight golfers competed in three days of play with nine flight champions and runners up awarded trophies.
The Myrtle Point City Council will meet with the District 41 School Board on Wednesday, September 27, in the council chambers to discuss mutual problems. The meeting follows a council session Tuesday night and covers additional items including a paid swing set for the West End and a water ban expansion petition from residents along Cattang Creek Road.
A drawing runs Saturday afternoon at 2 00 PM with a $300 prize for a shopper in the store or participating merchants. No winners in the past two drawings. the current prize awaits a caller when the winning name is announced.

Lans Leneve of Remote Oregon reports his Stevens Old Model single shot 22 pistol and holster lost during a Sandy Creek pigeon hunt. The gun is a sentimental keepsake, purchased in 1808 in Portland at the Lewis and Clark Exposition era, and a $12 reward is offered for its return.
A district notice invites residents in Myrtle Point to collect a red letter offering up to 25 dollars in coin cash at local grocers. The promotion highlights value for shoppers and urges participation.
Mrs Wayne Beverly May Harry, a 17 month old child survivor, died when the pickup she followed in rolled over after leaving Albany on Highway 99. She had just finished student teaching and was to begin first grade teaching at Maple School. Superintendent Armstrong praised her record and mourned the loss.
Marvin Miles of San Diego visiting friends in Remote and working at a Sandy Creek mill collapsed on the job Saturday. The cause of death is undetermined and autopsy findings are pending. Funeral services are to be announced by Schroeder Funeral Home. Local State Fair entries show strong showing with several blue ribbons and red ribbons in 4-H categories including sewing and entomology.
First day figures from District 41 show a total attendance of 1504, down 37 from last year as Superintendent Marbert Armstrong notes possible late arrivals and adjustments. High school enrollment stands at 986 versus 378 last year, with Etalka not in line with others.
Dr. W. L. Van Loan, president of Southwestern Oregon College, announced 120 student applications accepted for admission. Registration for all divisions runs 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. September 18–23 at the North Bend Campus. Courses span Lower Division Collegiate, Business, and Technical-Vocational programs with staff largely in place.
West Coast Telephone announces the Coos Bay division directory will mail next week. It lists 21 308 telephones as of July 31 1961, shows 88 alpha and 86 classified pages. It introduces all number calling and replaces prefixes with 267 and 888 by 110 PST Sept 16.
Coos County Exhibit placed 5th at the State Fair amid entries from 18 counties. Planner Mrs. Bob Detlefsen reported a perfect 98 from judges and an overall score of 341 of 300, noting strong competition and Curry County taking first with the same couple winning for seven years.
