Oil venture sparks drilling plans near Cottage Grove

W F Kernin, noted as the mas tempted to tatesest Tad? queer, discovered oil near Cottage Grove. He was engaged to drill a water well for an oil firm and began securing licenses or, asidjela, in ground. Reports say drilling may resume on Lodper Byms and Sudleriia after a pause of about five years.

Firehouse saves family as Myrtle Point blaze rages

A Tuesday fire at the Frank Porter home on Spruce street and Railroad avenue gutted the two story building causing about two thousand dollars in damage. Mrs Porter and a sick relative were carried to safety by neighbors before firefighters arrived. The blaze endangered nearby Auto Park garage and other residences as wind drove flames and smoke through the structure. Chief E J Schneider arrived shortly after alarm despite being away.

Former Myrtle Point Resident Dies in Grants Pass

Word reached Myrtle Point of the death of Mrs. F A Collins, a former resident who passed away in Grants Pass on October 19. She was about 70 and had lived in the area for about ten years before moving to Orland and later Grants Pass. The cause of death was not disclosed. The county health report noted chicken pox and scarlet fever cases in Coos County.

Logging Camp Tragedy Kills George Slagle in Cunningham Area

George Everett Slagle, 44, of Myrtle Point, was killed on his first shift at a logging camp near Cunningham Monday about 10 as Cody Cackler suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized in Marshfield. Slagle leaves a wife Grelia Weekley and three children, with services at Schree der Gano Funeral Home Coquille and burial in Mason Cemetery Coquille.

Hiram Francis Edwards Dies at County Farm

Hiram Francia Edwards who came to Mystle Point in 1876 died of cancer Monday at the county farm. Survived by North Bend and Mrs. Florence Ott of Allegany. His father owned the Seaman tract east of town. Services were held at Myrtle Point cemetery Monday conducted by Elder C. H. Barklow.

A highway commission worker stood at Hoffman bridge counting vehicles over a set period to gauge usage. The cost of highway projects is tied to traffic volume.

Coos County Council Endorses Extension Work and Shell Deposits

Coos county agricultural council met in the courthouse and reviewed 1983 extension and county agent work. They urged more farmers to use the service, asked the county court to study shell deposits for agricultural lime, and supported a half time assistant agent for Deene and Curry counties. They also asked inclusion of the Coquille River in the federal drainage and navigation survey and urged T B accreditation for the county.

The Myrtle Point Women’s Club hosted a Monday meeting at the city hall with Mrs Sedie Orr Dunbar of Portland as a guest of distinction. A focus on Campére Girls and Indian music followed, and A C Cooper urged Myrtle Point women to back a flower club.

Community Festival Plans Big Two Day Event

The Siquald fair announces events for November 8 and 9 led by Lions in charge. There will be a weight guessing contest for stock, a Husk ing Bee, and an old time dance. Fire Chief Gardiner and firemen will decorate streets and host the Me note Killers show Deacon Dubbs. The Women’s Club with Mrs. Smith will entertain at the afternoon, assisted by the Boy Scouts. American Legion will stage Saturday stunts including a kangaroo court and a $25.80 prize for the best Geamge float or feature in the parade.

Warm Welcome for New Pastor and Family

Members of the Methodist church hosted a reception for the new minister Rev Hall and his family. Mrs. O H Clarke Predesese Summers and Mr Barklow welcomed them and Rev Hall thanked the group for the warm reception. The evening featured hospitality and lively socializing. The visit to the parsonage revealed the pantry stocked with provisions for the table.
