Oregon anglers and hunters anticipate a big elk season start with about 45 000 hunters entering the woods October 28. The general elk season runs until November 15 on the coast and to November 26 in the Cascades and eastern ranges with bull elk legal in most areas. Some units require permits only and north coast areas see no general season. Last year saw a record harvest with over 10 000 successful bags.
The Oregon State Highway Commission approved a $38 million project with the Army Corps of Engineers to move 33 miles of the Columbia River Highway ahead of the John Day Dam reservoir. A four lane John Day River bridge will be built, with contracts likely in December.
West Coast Telephone reports completion of basic provisions to augment service in Bridge and Remote areas of the Myrtle Point exchange. The Bone Mountain Myrtle Point section of Pacific Northwest long distance lead was purchased to support expansion as division manager Vance Weatherton said.
