An all day conference for representatives of the missionary societies of the Presbyterian churches in Coos county was held at the Marshfield Presbyterian church. Officers from Southwest Oregon Presbyterial included Mrs. J. H. Edgar of Ashland president, Mrs. J A. Campbell of Roseburg, Mrs. Elmer Russell of North Bend, Mrs. William Poling of Phoenix, and Mr and Mrs. Fred Scherer of Marshfield. About 50 ladies attended with Myrtle Point participants Mesdames Henry Schroeder, Charles Stallard, Norman Morsing and Hugh T. Mitchelmore, the latter taking part in the opening devotions and serving as organist.
The director of selective service said volunteers may enlist for one year through local boards. Registrants classified as 1 and physically fit will have their order numbers advanced, but only when a quota exists. Applications before next week yield little gain, and early quotas unlikely before November. Volunteers aged 18 to 21 need parental consent and a registration card.
Seventeen first year Ag boys were initiated into the greenhand degree at the Ag meeting Friday evening. Names include Dear Epperson Verlin Moorey Eugene Wyana Buddy Bright Leslie Miller Dean Heistand and others. Initiation refreshments of cider and cookies were served. The Baker and Albee couples left Sunday for California with business in Eureka and Susanville before returning Wednesday evening.
City council directs engineer to draft specifications for a blanket WPA project covering water street and sewer needs. The plan aims to access WPA assistance in the coming year as water, curb, sidewalk, and other improvements proceed.
The Myrtle Point Post No 38 receives letters of commendation from the state headquarters for leading an annual membership drive while already reporting strong progress. Letters praise Commander H Ernest Watkins and Adjutant Bert Peerson for efficient leadership and a swift start to membership, noting Myrtle Post No 26 as a top early achiever and expressing congratulations from department officials Carl Moser and Alfred P Kelly.
A public meeting on Americanism is sponsored by the Myrtle Point IOOF lodge for Saturday evening November 2 at 8 o'clock in the high school auditorium. Speakers include Jack P. Before the talks there is a community sing with a violin and saxophone solo by Fred Dallas and piano accompaniment by Mrs. Hugh Y Mitchelmore. Silent Neal will sing with Mrs. Lyle Carver at the piano.
Denmark hosts Mrs. Lee Brown and infant son visiting Corvallis after leaving Friday. Sunday callers at Floyd Reed home include Mr. and Mrs. Alpert Britton and Albertine, Elaine of Denmark, with Day Guests Mrs. Jesse Clinton Silas Ellis and Mrs. A M Christensen of Myrtle Point visiting the J Myers home.
Lotus Grove extension unit met last Thursday afternoon at Mrs Donald Drummer's home with plans to organize a study club on family life. Attendees included Mesdames Thena Warner Constance Hoffman Robert James J B R Wiley Ray Epperson Lorin Guerin Selden Warner Verne Magill and Lloyd Davenport. Next meeting set for Thursday Nov 14 at Mrs Druliner's.
Mrs James Walsh hosted the Alter Society's Thursday meeting at her home where she received Thang lovely gifts at her stork shower. A 4 o'clock luncheon was served to members and guests noted. Public card party at city hall scheduled for Friday at 8 o'clock. The Friendly Dozen Club met Wednesday at Mrs Luther Daniels’ home with seven members, sewing and refreshments afterward.
Coquille auxiliary now Myrtle Point Episcopal Guild reorganizes at Mrs Austinater home. Officers: RH Lemon vicepresident, Mrs John Felsher secretary, Mrs A L Powrie treasurer, Mr Harry Dement and Mrs Frank Freeman director of works. Attendees: Dement, Felzher, Powrie, Freeman, Lemon, Exama Lowe, Chris Nelson, hostess Mrs Dodge. Next meeting Nov 13. Presbyterian Ladies' Aid to meet next week in church parlors hosted by Mrs Stanley Phillipe and Mrs Frank Forter.
