Coos County tax rolls show a valuation of 33 973 167 008 for the fiscal year 1948 49, with total taxes of 1 831 584 06. Since 1914 the valuation has climbed from 21 834 938 to 33 937 167, an increase of 12 138 228 over 34 years, amid a county levy of 6 mills the lowest on record.
Secretary War T Newbry notes rural pedestrians face greater per incident danger despite fewer fatalities. Six month records show 19 of 40 pedestrian deaths occurred in rural areas. key causes include failing to judge car speeds and high rural speeds. He urges parental guidance for children and careful driving near schools and crossings.
The Oregon hunting season has claimed 21 lives with another hunter missing near Madras. A Phoenix man was shot by a hunter misidentifying a target in Southern Oregon, while Portland resident Joseph Persha died as a tree toppled onto his tent in the north. Other causes include gunshot, car crashes, and heart attacks on hunts.

Coos County Pomona Grange met in Sumner last Saturday with a lively session. A resolution urged the Coos County Court to sponsor a program to control tansy ragwort harmful to cattle. New members were welcomed and a degree was conferred for their benefit. A garbage-dumps committee was appointed to raise the issue with the County Court and County Sanitarian C Eugene Fields. The Bridge grange reported a $1000 fair booth profit, to fund a new juvenile hall, due for completion and dedication before year’s end. Memorial services honored deceased members, and a robes committee was formed for fifth degree work.
The Merald office reports receiving a melted amount of sample ballots for the November 2 general election. County Clerk L. W. Oddy sent the ballots. Only the allotted quantity remains. Call the office to request one, first come, first served.
Report states SIMMONS is cleared of charges in the shooting case. Jury returned a true bill on Beesdbont War m or who shot and killed a youth. Indictments were also returned in three other cases with three additional persons named.
Lyle McCulloch Jr of Powers survived a wreck when his truck was crushed by a moving logging train last Friday morning. He walked away with hardly a scratch and was treated at Mast hospital after the incident. The report notes McCulloch’s brush with disaster occurred as the train foreman and local residents describe the collision and aftermath.
D L Marillett says Coos Bay will tie into Bonneville power by October 1 1956 with Eugene Reedport Coos Bay link to CO P U and Mountain States facilities. New industries seek power six months yearly but may face cuts if Columbia River water runs low. A $28 million Grand Coulee Eugene line and a $12 million Eugene to Coos Bay line are proposed with federal and private cooperation noted.

Coos Bay Times reports district manager Bate Power warns that outages may recur during the current mill shutdown and hours of blackout may reappear. A Monday outage traced to a failure on line No. deniers power line linking hay with Roseburg left the local steam plant unable to bear the load. Only when Coos Bay Lumber plant runs and hog fuel replaces emergency oil will area regain self sufficiency.

Local girls from Mittle Point high school attended an FHA meeting in McMinville on October 16. Officers Karen Barklow vice-president, Jessie Cameron treasurer, and Marjorie Belcher historian-reporter participated. The group hosted guest speaker Miss Seng Wen Wee from Korea and a local speaker Ms Woo who had recently arrived in the United States.
