Coos county marks 102nd birthday of Aunt Ellen Robison at Timmonas Nursing Home in Coquille. Well wishers from across Southwestern Oregon sent greeting cards and shared cake prepared by Mrs. Ora Timmons. Niece Mrs. William L. Bell of Myrtle Point notes the family ties and long residence in the area.
Heart attacks, auto wrecks, and gunshots have claimed 17 lives since the deer season opened. Deaths include Chas Ward in Oregon City, Herman Rantk near Sisters, Emil Hall of Sutherlin, Fitz Swansea of Days Creek, and Wade Crouch in a fatal encounter with his father near the brush.
Myrtle Point student Norman Weekly, son of Mrs R. Syfort, Myrtle Point, has been elected president of the National Collegiate Players at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Weekly is a junior major in speech.
Biography recounts Thomas E. Dewey born March 24 1902 in Owosso Michigan to Ann and a Hastings native father. It follows his early work selling papers debating in school and college days at Michigan and Columbia Law School then rising to the U S Attorney post in southern New York under George Medalie.
Word reached this office that Mrs Lettie Sherwood wife of Ed Sherwood died at their home in California. She was a longtime stock raiser in this area and died September 11 and was buried in Porterville California. She was a sister of O E Marsters and aunt of Mrs Rankin who, with Mr Rankin and Mr Marsters, attended the funeral.
The Coos County Welfare commission reports a two year welfare budget exceeding one million dollars starting July 1. Funds cover general assistance, foster care, medical care, old age and dependent child aid, with federal, state, and county shares totaling $1,025,399.80 in allocations.
A group including Ben Daniels E C Barker Henry Schroeder and Elbert Schroeder from Coquille Fritz Barklow Dan Weitzel Bud Griffen and another Bud Griffen left Sunday for a week long deer hunt near Ely Oregon. Fritz Barklow expects returns in time for Herald photos of the biggest kill of the season.
Lee Ray Post 2928 VFW will host District Five meeting in Myrtle Point this Sunday October 17 at 2 00 p m in the Grange hall above the Myrtle Lane Inn State and district officers are expected to attend Commander Kermi Martig announced William Stewart of Bandon serves as district five commander The local auxiliary will provide dinner for convening members after proceedings end.
The coroner's jury in Coquille finds Arthur Cotter's death at Beadmont ranch near Beadmont was caused by a rifle blast from Broadbent farmer Simmons. Simmons faces possible involuntary manslaughter charges with a $500 bond posted. Byron Cotter and two companions testified, detailing the hunting party and gunfire after Cotter fell from a tree.
County Clerk O W Oddy reports 8351 Democrats and 695 Republicans on Coos County eligible voter list with total 15626 registered voters for November 2 election. Independents number 156 and members of other faiths 162. About 2000 more voters registered since the general election prep.

Lions club directors announced at their meeting that the annual Sadie Hawkins Day dance will occur Saturday November 13 at the Oaks Pavilion Myrtle Point. Co chairmen George Linn and Ritchie Francis organize arrangements with Johnny Dayton providing the music. The board approved about 180 dollars for grammar and junior high school music departments to fund instruments and music stands.
Mrs. Chas. Rackleff of 737 4th Street called the Herald office Saturday to remove class ads she had placed last week to run indefinitely. She reported results so fast that one insertion was enough.
Mayor Elton Schroeder announced the regular city meeting will be held Monday evening. Officials expect discussion on a city sale from the city and related items on the agenda.
