In Oregon a tansy ragwort beetle release expands

Flea beetle colonies from Fort Bragg were released in Curry and Coos counties to biologically control tansy ragwort. The program, run by the Oregon Department of Agriculture with Lynn Cannon Cool Extension agent and Ed DeVenson, distributes starter colonies to eight western counties while linking with cinnabar moth efforts to prevent seed spread.

Coos County Grants Plan for Land Use Review

SWOCC bond plan seeks 98.8 million Phase V for campus rebuild

College district voters head to the polls on November 4 to approve a Phase V bond package of about 98.8 million to fund roughly half of an $18.7 million master construction program. District officials cite enrollment growth and a need for a compact campus with new facilities including classrooms, a student services center, nursing program space, a TV studio, art gallery, and remodeling for accessibility. President Jack Brookins calls the plan a public investment and an engine to keep Coos County workers employed through construction.

AFS Plans Fund Raising Dessert Evening

American Field Service will hold a dessert coffee time on December 4 at 7 30 p.m. at Myrtle Crest. The event is the major fundraiser for the local chapter and supports student exchange programs. Laura Isenhart will organize hostesses for tables of eight. contact her at 572 2717 or 572 2404.

The Myrtle Point school district announced it has received 21 416 in continued funds from the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act.

New MPHS Princesses Highlight Board Meeting

The Monday board session approved funds to retain three full time positions including a cluster supervisor bus mechanic and maintenance person through the school year. The district also received 5354 from a federal agency for the first two months and 7200 in federal money to hire Paul Lenz as teacher's aide assisting forestry instructor Ken Ernest and building instructor Bob Steele. Funds approved under Title 6 montes from CETA were written by Jim King for special programs and will hire an audio visual aide with no carpenters expiring Dec 6. The district has pending federal approval for additional funding.

Logger Dies as Log Rolls Onto Him in Coos County Woods

Ronald Delmar Handsacher, 34, of Myrtle Point, was killed Tuesday late morning when a five foot diameter log rolled over him at Cherry Creek east of Myrtle Point.
