Four local boys were initiated into the Order of the Arrow. Budds Stemmler of Troop 99 and John Murray of Troop 145, both of Marthe Point, Fred Cunningham of Droop 136 and Tom Porter of Troop 135, Powers, earned Ordeal status after nomination, callout, and a 24 hour ordeal.
General Telephone District Manager Bob McKenzie announced two cable projects in the Myrtle Point exchange. One runs about six miles north of Highway 42 and along Sandy Creek Road, the other seven miles along Kinlesx and Coos Wagon roads. The program will provide aerial wire circuits with improved reliability for up to five parties per mile, with total cost around 492 500 dollars.

MPHS students consider hosting a foreign exchange student. The project requires an American Field Service chapter with five adults and a student-class representation, costing 650 dollars including travel, insurance, and personal expenses. The plan splits 400 from the school and 250 from the community, with in-kind support from each class and seniors funding graduation costs.
Superintendent Joe H. Stewart of District 41 is named to a three year term on Oregon State Department of Education Curriculum Advisory Committee. The seven member panel includes superintendents and curriculum directors who study issues and advise on curriculum problems for Oregon public schools. The panel typically meets monthly.
Verlin Hermann, PHS ag instructor, marks 30th anniversary of the American Farmer degree by joining 140 Oregon delegates at the 40th Annual FFA National Convention in Kansas City Missouri. Attending with Les Walker, Dave Horton, and Scott Mayse, Hermann and the Myrtle Point delegates traveled by Union Pacific Railroad from Portland October 7.
An Oregon report estimates total agricultural losses at 1 720 765 across 20 counties from a Monday wind storm. Orchard and field crops totaled 812 000, farm buildings 541 500, farm timber 81 000, and other damage including irrigation and trees 286 265. The walnut crop faced the largest setback.
Southwestern Oregon College hosts bus drivers and cooks from public schools for workshops on October 13 in Prosper Hall and Sitkum Hall with state and district experts, while a severe Willamette Valley crop loss estimate tops $383000 with salvage plans.

Clyde Reynolds, a Catching Creek rancher near Myrtle Point, has planted 5000 walnut trees on 100 acres, with plans for 200 more. The Hartley walnut matures in four years, UC bred for cooler climates, aiming to harvest about 1500 pounds per acre and market directly.
