The Myrtle Point City Council on Monday night approved a street improvement bond sale with the lowest interest rates since 1954. Security Bank of Myrtle Point was the sole bidder, buying the issue at 3.5 percent on the first half and 4 percent on the longer second half, with a resolution passed to finalize the sale.
Lucille Otter was chosen as this week’s Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce Greeter Car hostess. She will greet newcomers to the city and present gift certificates from local merchants. The committee thanks all who showed interest and says the Greeter Car should be operating within weeks.
After a lengthy meeting with the City Council the District 41 School Board voted to borrow from local banks to cover the lag before tax revenues arrive in January. The county treasurer and officials say advancing county funds is improper, so District 41 will seek short term loans of $75 000 now and up to $225 000 more as needed. Coos Bay districts face combined borrowings exceeding $600 000 during the same period and other county districts will borrow proportionally.
Pacific Trans-Video Inc purchases the Community Antenna Television systems in Myrtle Point and Powers Oregon from Bay Television Inc. and Trans-Video. James Ho Lenahan says the move aims to improve reception and service for local subscribers. Lenahan describes the franchise as a living trust and notes ongoing staff positions for R L Cowart and Mrs J F Dunn with Dunn retiring from his post.

Pastor Dean Mason secretary Hanne Schmidt treasurer W A Roberts and other roles were appointed by installing officer Elder Glenn Turnbull. A Sacrament was served and a basket lunch was planned for October 15 with Elder Harry Rucharber as guest speaker.
City officials led by Administrator Ben Nichols outline a nuclear attack plan for Myrtle Point. The program envisions detailed shelter placement and refugee routing for 3500 people, with police Chief Clarence Ralph directing volunteers and regular progress reports to the council.
Myrtle Point football coach Bob Peterson leads the Bobcats to a non league record of two wins and one loss. They face Peele Piles Friday as league play begins. Cottage Grove battles Seana Leet Friday with both teams aiming to improve in an A11 era.
The Penguin Locker reports 83 bucks turned in by Tuesday, about one third higher than last year at this stage, with deer sizes average and one dressed at 142 pounds and another at 14 pounds. A heifer calf was killed on the Vern Breuer farm on Catching Creek Friday night, prompting concern over unlawful acts and landowner reluctance to permit hunts.
