A drivers license examiner will be on duty in Myrtle Point at City Hall on Wednesday October 9 1968 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles urges applicants for original licenses or driving permits to file early to allow time for the license tests.
Coos County community concert tickets for 1968 69 were mailed October 1 by association secretary Miss Marion Horsfall. Call 267 7631 if you have not received tickets within a week. The first concert is October 13 at 2 15 P M featuring the Dorian Quintet a young chamber group playing flute oboe clarinet and French horn in a program ranging from standard to contemporary. Memberships still available at seven dollars.
Myrtle Point High School will host a visitation team from state colleges on Thursday Oct 10 1968 at 9 00 am. The Oregon State System of Higher Education visits every high school in the state and aims to inform students about college training beyond high school. Parents are invited to attend and discuss post high school plans with their children.
Myrtle Point High School Boosters Club kicks off a membership drive after the Mapleton football game Friday night in the High School Biology room. Parents and friends are urged to join. numbers for contact are listed, and a football contest entry blank appears on page 7.
A weekly feature named Candidates Corner starts in this issue on page twelve. State county and local office seekers share views on topics affecting Coos County and the state. The Herald disclaims endorsements and invites all candidates to participate each week until election time.
A car lost control on Highway 42 plunging over an embankment injuring two youths Thomas Wells the driver and Steve Monen who was hospitalized at Sacred Heart Eugene in critical condition. Mary Mooney caused two weekend crashes with minor damages and no injuries in one collision with Marie DeWak and a second impact with a parked car. Larry Cailders suffered lacerations and internal injuries after his jeep struck a lime on the road and rolled over. a passenger sustained no serious injuries.
The Democratic Party of Coos County plans an October 5 motorcade starting in Charleston at 9:00 a.m. visiting Bandon Myrtle Point Coquille North Bend and ending in Coos Bay for a 4:00 p.m. headquarters dedication at 215 Anderson. Citizens are urged to join, meet candidates, and decorate cars for the rally.
Fay F. Crabtree reminds Coos County residents that October 5 1968 is the last day to register for the General Election to be held November 6 1968. County offices in Coquille and Coos Bay open 9 00 AM to 5 00 PM. Voters must register or re register if address or name changed and must be 21 by election day.
GP opens about half a million acres in Oregon and Georgia Pacific lands in Georgia for deer hunts starting Oct 5. Areas near Toledo Newport Pilot Rock Coos Curry and Springfield Eugene report favorable conditions with some weekend-only access due to logging. Pamphlets on venison care and burning restrictions accompany safety patrols and posted cattle grazing notices.
Rotary International Group Study Exchange team from Australia will visit Myrtle Point on October 8. They, along with District Governor John Moon and Governor William Maggarty, will attend a community dinner at 7:00 p.m. at Broadbent Grange. Other team members include Brien Spencer Ian McClelland Bob MacKillop Fred Elliott Geoff Ashton Ian Spencer and Peter Gilbank.
The season starts October 5 in both eastern and western Oregon with targets split between buck deer and chukar and Hungarian partridge. Most hunters likely select buck deer as the general season runs to October 27 in the east and November 3 in the west. Bag limit is one buck with visible antlers east of the cascades and one forked antler buck west.
