Governor Tom McCall declares Thursday November 25 1971 as a day of Thanksgiving across Oregon. He emphasizes resilience amid controversy and urges gratitude for faith, opportunity, and the nation’s enduring governmental system.
Myrtle Point prepares to open the Christmas shopping season with Santa arriving at 1 p.m. Saturday in downtown Myrtle Point after a Norway Field flight piloted by Dean Mason. He will hand out candy to children and tour local shops, with future events and a large prize giveaway planned by the chamber and Lions Club.
A broad survey of historic Coquille Valley agriculture covers Dr. Mermaan's 1869 Brant house and brickmaking, berry farming by Ed Forrest and Tom Forrest at Forrest Berry Farm, the Wiley Easter lilies and clay-walled home, the rise of logan berries, local canneries like Holt Chase, Myrtle leaf perfume experiments, and varied market ventures from cabbage to poke salit highlighting the valley's inventive farming spirit and notable individuals.
Kenneth E. Carl administrator of the Oregon Dairy and Consumer Services Division will travel to Little Rock during the week of November 28 as a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Food and Drug Officials of the United States. The committee will meet with the FDA to discuss a training program for state inspectors in food law administration and enforcement. He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Carl of Arago.
City officials warn that sign permits are required soon for any signs within 680 feet of a state highway or visible from that corridor. Property owners should apply promptly to avoid penalties.
The Sounds of Freedom, an internationally known choir from Brigham Young University, Provo Utah, will give a free concert Tuesday November 30 at 8 p.m. in the Upper Presley Mall, SWOCC Arts and Lectures Committee organizing with local Latter Day Saints groups. The program includes Gave the Country What the World Needs Now is Love Bridge Over Troubled Waters and other pieces. The group formed in 1906 and has performed nationally and in Canada.
A reader contests a missing Myrtle tree from a social register and seeks a tape to measure its girth while referencing large Port Orford cedar records from the National Forest above Powers. Dec 4–12 will host top money-winners of 1971 in writing events at the Myrtle Point hall. attendees invited.
