An all school cast presented The Mouse That Roared in the Myrtle Point high school cafeteria from November 18 to 20 directed by Arthur Mots. Lead roles were played by Joan Dement Bob Howell Don Ellis and Larry Meier with strong professional energy and standout costumes.
Five humanities students Dan Brewster Lynda Gilkison Marcia Knight Kathi Franzen and Bonnie Roth attended the Puccini tragedy La Boheme in Nevada on November 17.
The school board adopted a new salary plan raising district costs by about 20 000 in addition to the 9 000 teachers receive next year. Teachers urged an index style schedule with annual percentage raises and noted comparisons with nearby districts. A substitute starting BA salary would be 5 306 with other districts paying up to 5 600 as Myrtle Point. A prior proposed schedule would cost 45 000, and a vote favored the higher arrangement.
Walter Barkiowee reports the county commissioner position vacated after a decision by Commissioners Howard Lentz and Cheries Maheffy at 8:00 am Tuesday. The action impacts current officeholders and local governance.
The thirtieth annual meeting of the Western Oregon Livestock Association was held in Gearhart Oregon on September 18 19 and 20 at the Gearhart Motor Inn. John Carman president of the Coos County Livestock Association announced the event with Mer Cadmus from Salem and Larry Williams outlining Livestock programs. Bob Reed of Warrenton and Wallace Dement of Myrtle Point were noted as officers and resolutions committee chair respectively as the group prepared for elections and next year's work plan.
City officials report vandalism costs rising from 1800 to 2000 dollars last year to potentially 2800 this year. City Manager Ben Nichols and Police Chief Lewis Floyd warn of patrols and arrests, while Pyramid Block Company offers a reward to stop sign vandalism and the theft of a theatre door handle. Citizens urged to report incidents promptly.
Lions club TB testing event at Myrtle Hotel and McKay's market tested 371 people led by Bill Downing. The Coon County TB and Health Association Southwestern Oregon Medical Society and county health department organized. A mobile X-ray unit will visit Myrtle Point December 6 at Safeway lot.
The Oregon Department of Agriculture and Oregon State University announce the 14th Annual Milk Sanitarians Short Course on November 30 at the Memorial Union Building Corvallis opening at 8 30 a m. Public session includes OSU staff dairy fieldmen and industry reps with speakers from US Public Health Service and Washington and Olympia officials.
Three Myrtle Point seniors Dan Hanscett Bob Howell and Dennis Waterman received National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test letters of commendation. The award indicates outstanding ability and potential for successful college work.
At the Nov 24 Thanksgiving assembly the choir presented songs emphasizing patriotism and religion. The program featured novelty numbers by the triple trio and a folk group of non choir students performing hits like If I Had a Hammer Blowin in the Wind and Michael Africa A land of Probs featured in an IRC disc while Marshfield North Bend and Myrtle Point join joint study sessions this year.
