Amid Hungary's civil conflict Nagy urged rebels to halt as Russian and Romanian forces moved in. Radio Budapest claimed troops were retreating, while reports described Russians attacking under a white flag and cheating with false promises.
John F. Cawrse announces the purchase of 1500 acres of timber cutting rights in Sandy Creek and Rock Creek from Coos Bay Timber Company, a Georgia-Pacific subsidiary. The deal augments existing holdings to sustain lumber operations for ten years near Remote Oregon.
Elton Schroeder and Paul McElwain returned from a two week deer hunting trip near Missoula Montana with seven black tail bucks bagged in the final leg of the hunt. The party hunted mostly in snowstorms with six to seven inches on the ground and temperatures near zero for much of the trip.
A 1950s era church reflection notes record attendance surging to nearly 50 million adults weekly and predicts 1956 figures will surpass this. Easter Sunday turnout rose, with six of ten Adultericans present at services, urging daily gratitude in worship and in every grateful heart.
George notes a national magazine report on five American aircraft producers with contracts worth $2 billion to build over 600 jet planes. About 50 area residents attended the all out Civil Defense meeting at city hall Tuesday evening called by Ron Endicott. He urged leaders from each area to report progress and warned that in the atomic age preparation matters more than monetary assets.
The Coos Bay Chapter of Rose Croix conferred the 18th degree on a class of candidates led by C W Wras and Walter J Norlin with Wray directing. The Oregonian reports Pacific University freshman tackle Mike Russell received high praise from head coach Bill Tiedgen for his performance. Russell, son of Mr and Mrs Nelson Russell of Myrtle Point, graduates of Myrtle Point High School, is noted as a top member of the university grid squad.
Sam Dement, local stockman and president of the Coos County Fair Association, was elected president of the Western Livestockmen's Association at the annual meeting held in Eugene last week. He succeeds Howard Leatherman of the same area as president.
Ten year old Ronald Schmidt, aided by his father Richard, bought 10 of the company's one million shares, becoming the youngest of West Coast Telephone's 6500 shareholders. Ronald and his brothers show interest in investments and telephony as a family venture in Oregon.
Benjamin Snyder reports local FFA boys plan a project to repair discarded toys for children who may not see Santa. Donate usable dolls buggies tricycles bicycles wagons airplanes and any toy to the Agricultural building behind the high school to spread Christmas cheer.
The Interchurch Fellowship sponsors the annual Union Thanksgiving service next Wednesday evening November 21 at 7 30 p m. at the Church of the Brethren Rev L Pounds will be guest speaker and the public is urged to attend.
Mr and Mrs Paul Brewer and Mr and Mrs Henry Schroeder will attend the OGC University of Oregon football game on Thursday and return home Friday.
Washington released notice says Myrtle Point contractor Martin Kincheloe was awarded a $391,960 contract by the Bureau of Land Management to build the first nine miles of the Cherry Brummel Creek O and C access road in western Oregon. The project, in Coos Bay district, aims to open about 1.4 million board feet of old growth timber including salvage timber.
A record turnout at the Myrtle Point Sportsmen's Club Thanksgiving shoot on Sunday Nov 18 drew a steady stream of clay targets from 10 am to late evening. The club announced its Christmas shoot for Sunday Dec 16 inviting all shooters to participate with no club membership required.
