Joe E. Dunn explains the Oregon Old Age Pension Act after voters approved it. The act directs the legislature to fund a minimum pension of 50 monthly for qualifying women and men, with medical care, burial, and related support, while leaving funding methods to lawmakers.
Myrtle Point churches plan a full religious census of the area. Led by Rev Marion Stern the effort aims to gauge sentiment and foster fellowship. Teams of two from different churches will canvas every home starting Sunday in November.
The Myrtle Point Lions Club hosts a Sadie Hawkins Day dance at the Oaks Pavilion on the local fair grounds with Johnny Daytona’s orchestra. Prizes for best costumes, grand march at 9, 8:30 to 12:30, intermission tap dancing, proceeds for civic good. A Herald reporter will photograph winners.
Monday evening November 8 officers and Sunday school teachers of the Presbyterian church met to plan the Christmas program for Sunday morning December 19. Attendees included Mesdames E C Barker T G Sumerlin Henry Schroeder and Mr and Mrs Andrew Waterman.
The Planning Board inspected proposed sites for a Myrtle Point grade school and unanimously selected the Maple street hilltop tract of about four acres as far superior. The Spruce street option of about 10% acres would require large leveling costs and drainage improvements. Board members present included Leland Barklow, Rev Marion Stern, Clare Lehmanowsky, Paul Franzen, Howard Whitaker, Dick Johnson, and G W Hall.
Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton Thrift recently returned from a two week trip to California. They visited Oakland at Mrs Thrift s sister Mrs Frank Gallas and saw Mrs Thrift s brother John Kaubish a dental student in San Francisco. En route they stopped in Sacramento and Reno and traveled the John Day highway through Klamath Falls. The trip was wonderful but Ham immediately began remodeling the Thrift Grocery and Market which he owns. They are turning things upside down and every which way.
Army engineers propose a five year program to build dams, power facilities, and flood control works across Oregon Washington Montana and Idaho. The plan aims to produce more than ten million kilowatts of hydroelectric power and protect Portland from floods of the early 1948 period.
City Recorder Nick Perkins reports four men paid fines in his office last week. Donald D Stanger pleaded guilty to speeding and paid 13 dollars plus 2 dollars costs. Duane W Pound and James Arnold paid 25 dollars plus 2 dollars costs each for drunken and disorderly conduct. Frank E Corcoran was fined 150 dollars plus 8 dollars costs for drunken driving. Officer C Smith handled the arrests.

Twenty eight babies born at Mast Hospital Myrtle Point since October 15 with a clear lead for girls. The list records parents from Coos County including Coquille Sitkum Myrtle Point and Riverton with birth dates ranging from October 15 to November 10. The report also notes a big fire rally and an upcoming high school game at 3 p m today.
Robert Harrison Irwin 27 and Robert Repass 20, both of Coquille, were killed when their rented remodeled P-26 crashed shortly after takeoff from Coquille airfield. Repass piloted the plane. Repass family narrowly escaped injury in a separate car accident en route to the scene, suffering only minor injuries.
Rebekahs initiated Monday evening with 64 members and visitors present. Refreshments were provided by the refreshment committee Lena Brown, Lucille Trigg, Jennie Rackleff, and Rosie Jewett. Visitors included Mrs Bert Pearson of Myrtle Creek and Mr Hal Crawford. The Odd Fellows plan a potluck dinner for Wednesday evening with a social to follow.
The Point Herald reports the resignation of William Hemmelgarn Jr. known as Bill, who left Wednesday evening on the 5 o clock bus for Dayton. He will work with J Logan White on the Dayton Tribune, while Mrs. Hemmelgarn remains in Myrtle Point pending his new placement.
