Myrtle Point Observe National Education Week Activities

American Education Week in Myrtle Point runs November 7 to 12 with NEA sponsorship. On Tuesday clubs and organizations are invited to send a representative to visit Myrtle Point Schools at 845 a.m. in the Maple Primary School gym. The tour centers on reading programs and school quality. The district asks callers to pre register due to limited classrooms. Chamber of Commerce visits Spruce School on November 6 with lunch at Myrtle Point High cafeteria.

Les Walker Wins Humorous Division At South Coast Contest

Senior Les Walker won the humorous division at the South Coast Invitational Speech Contest held October 28 at Marshfield High. Etta Ree Waterman took the final prize in serious interpretation. Ten Myrtle Point students competed against eleven other Southern Oregon schools. Attending schools included North Bend Mid High Medford Saint Mary's Eagle Point Ashland Marshfield Crater Phoenix Roseburg and Myrtle Point.

Proclamation Designates American Education Week 1967

Erwin Wilberger Mayer of Myrtle Point proclaims November 5 11 1967 as American Education Week urging citizens to examine the quality of local schools and support lifelong learning for youth amid a nation’s future changes.

Metzgus Receives UN Service Award

Gus W. Metzgus was honored with the Distinguished Service Award by Erwin Wilberger for promoting nationwide observance of United Nations Day on October 24, in a ceremony on behalf of the United Nations Association of the United States of America.

Richter Service Held Saturday for Fred H. Richter

Funeral services were held at Myrtle Point Chapel for Fred H. Richter who died October 25 in Myrtle Point at 63. He was a retired lumberman and member of local unions. Surviving are his wife Silas, a son Jack Ellis, several daughters, a brother and sisters. The service was led by Rev. Orris Ty of the Coquille Christian Church with interment at Myrtle Crest Memorial Gardens. The Halloween Carnival at Myrtle Crest School on October 28 raised 494.17, with 200 going to the Senior High School scholarship fund and the rest to the PTA.

Fair To Stay Says Stockholders

The Coos County Fan Association held its annual meeting at the Myrtle Hotel on October 28 to elect directors including Tom Guerin Sam Dement Rudy Rochek Duke Davenport Verlin Hermann and others. The group urged the Coos County court to take over the County Fair and reported a brighter financial outlook for the 1967 fair with hopes to operate within existing income and avoid county taxes.

UGN Exceeds Goal in Myrtle Point Fund Drive

A final meeting held October 31 at the Myrtle Hotel with chairman Jim King and committee members reviewed remaining uncontacted donors. Donations totaled 2300 toward a 2000 goal, with countywide receipts at 980632 or 58.4 percent of 1380000 and expected to reach 70 percent soon. Army Private Robert E. Raigh, 18, of Myrtle Point, Ore., was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam on October 11.

Pianist Richard Cass to Perform in Coquille

The Coquille Valley Community Concert Association presents pianist Richard Cass in the second 1967-68 concert. Cass, a Greenville South Carolina native, rose to prominence as winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist Auditions and has since gained international and national acclaim as a versatile performer.

Local Merchants Plan Veteran's Day Observance

Myrtle Point merchants will close Saturday November 11 in observance of Veteran's Day. The Trades Committee recommends the Chamber approve the closure, noting local merchants have long been the sole Southwestern Oregon group to observe the holiday by shutting for business.
