School Board approves math contract and bids

The school board met Wednesday May 22 and approved a 97996 contract for Richard Cowan to teach math at the high school in fall. Bids were taken on a new station wagon and awarded to Southwestern Motors for a Chevelle four door. The East Fork Valley Sportsman Club signed the lease for Slikum School. Vandalism reported at Myrtle Crest School with five large knives stolen from the cafeteria and minor damage in one classroom. Street lights were broken in city areas due to rock throwing.

Coos County Health to Offer Preschool Hearing Vision Screenings

In June 1968 the Coos County Health Department and the Oregon State Board of Health will offer free hearing and vision screenings for preschool children ages three to six. Last year 6,200 children across 27 counties were tested, with 7 percent needing further hearing evaluation and 3 percent for vision issues. Early detection can prevent permanent damage. parents are urged to enroll eligible children.

Scholarships Awarded To Myrtle Point High Graduates

Myrtle Point High School honored a large class with numerous scholarships. Mike Adams led as local district and state winner of the BPOE Elks scholarship, with several peers receiving U of O tuition waivers and partial fees. Additional awards included beauty colleges, P T A scholarships, and district merit honors.

Myrtle Point Alumni Plan July Reunions and Picnic

Myrtle Point High alumni groups announce a July 14 picnic at 1 00 p.m. in Rotary Park for all graduates. Class of 1918 marks 50th reunion with July 15 banquet, class of 1943 plans a banquet on July 15, and class of 1963 marks 15th reunion on August 10 at the Myrtle Hotel. Officers named are Vernon House president Wallace Dement vice president Mrs Milton Schroeder secretary and Mrs Paul Davis treasurer.

French Aid Arrives for Six-Week Stay in Myrtle Point

Alain Guisep pelli a 20 year old French assistant teacher will spend six weeks in Myrtle Point beginning 1969 to help teach French with Mrs. Sixberry at MPHS. He holds the Bac calaureat in Philosophy and has supervised in a public school. He plans to pursue an English teaching license and enjoys racing football and is a member of a local Corsican basketball club.

Salmon Hatchery Rescue Efforts Under Way In Deschutes Basin

The Pelton Dam committee orders artificial rearing after hatchery troubles on the Deschutes. Marks from 1966 releases show limited upriver adults. wild runs near a record low. Eggs will be raised at Winard Falla on the Metolius and Oak Springs Deschutes for next spring releases.

School Vandalism Report at Myrtle Point Campus

Over the weekend unknown burglars took five large butcher knives from the cafeteria. A classroom suffered glue smeared on desks and other minor vandalism. Several lights were broken by rock throwing, with as many as six lights damaged. The incident is under investigation.

Azalea Festival I Brookings Climaxes Memorial Weekend

The Azalea Festival in Brookings Oregon runs June 1 and 2 drawing about 7000 to 8000 attendees. Sponsored by the Brookings Harbor Chamber of Commerce, festivities begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with a parade as the opening event.
