Oregon State Grange annual session moved from Marshfield to Myrtle Point on June 10 to 14. Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce mobilizes housing and hospitality for an expected thousand to fifteen hundred visitors, while officials stress that Grange welcomes hosts and values being invited.
Nineteen students who took the eighth grade exams achieved an unusually high standing. Despite a year with many illnesses in the schools the district is gratified by the strong showing and success of the pupils.
A Sunday June 2 picnic at Hollow Stump raises funds for the State Grange convention. Tickets cover all day sports and parking with equipment provided. Proceeds go to the convention. attendees may bring lunches or use hush arrangements by Mrs A J Hoover and her daughter Lucile.
The Myrtle Point ceremonies honored Civil War veterans and local service members. Attorney Dale King spoke of those buried at home and abroad while American Legion and GAR members led a parade and firing volley. Graves at Myrtle Point and Norway cemeteries were decorated.
Ernest Norris, a Dunham grocery salesman, purchased the C. B. Holloway eight acre ranch on the North Fork road at the city edge of Myrtle Point. The sale includes a cow, chickens, garden tools and house furniture. He plans to move to Arizona with his two daughters, while Norris will rent the property he just bought.
A letter to all subordinate granges and delegates confirms the State Grange convention will be held at Myrtle Point June 11 to 14. The letter, signed by deputy state Grange Master C. C. Hulet, announces the welcome and delivery to all groups. Marshfield papers report the chamber of commerce committee reacting with surprise at the act taken.
Myrtle Point loses 7 to 1 to visiting Eugene in a Bay Valley League game. Mack scores Myrtle Point's lone run, while Eugene pulls away with six in the fourth inning. Gate receipts near 160 dollars reflect strong local support. Coquille overtakes Marshfield for top percentage as Cottage Grove falls to Bandon.
Myrtle Point faces a major chance as the Grange visit brings 1000 to 1600 Oregon and neighboring state visitors over four days. Local effort aims to provide housing and meals using Myrtle Point High School facilities and grounds to showcase the county and boost business.
Myrtle Point committees convened to organize the state Grange gathering slated for June 10 to 14. Officials named chairs for housing finance camp grounds entertainment and more to raise funds and ready streets parking and police protection for an expected large turnout.
A canvass of Myrtle Point shows Mr Dickinson unable to locate hosts as delegates seek more rooms. He asks residents with unlisted accommodations to contact him at 106 to help visitors and the delegates, noting payment willingness and county benefit.
The Woman's club held its last meeting of the year at city hall with Arago hostesses. A full annual report from all departments was presented, showing strong progress and plans for next year. Officers elected: President Lucy Barker, vice presidents Nellie Fearnley L Linn, secretary M Earl Wilson, treasurer Elmer Russell. Paula Breuer and Kathryn Hamilton provided musical interludes.
A late night blaze heavily damaged the Velkmar building and the City Transfer facility in Myrtle. Fire crews, aided by Coquille, controlled the flames with several items saved across the street. The blaze started in a rear open area known as no mans land, with damage deemed beyond repair to the structures.
Arago choir members and friends shared a dinner at the city building last Sunday. About forty attended and everyone reported an enjoyable time.
A baby clinic at City Hall on June 4 from 1 to 3 PM invites mothers with infants or preschool children. Additional clinics will be held at Bridge School on June 18, and at Coquille City Hall on June date.
The Anti-Saloon League of Oregon screens The Transgressor in Myrtle Point High on Tuesday June 4 1998 at 8 pm. Rev R E Close will speak alongside the showing with no admission fee and offerings collected. children must be accompanied by parents.
