Myrtle Point wins second straight Coos county track cup

At Myrtle Point High School the track team earned the school’s second consecutive Coos county team trophy and won a permanent cup after a third year of competition. Track letters were awarded to Howard Duncan Doug Warner Ed Brooks Leo Paulsen Charlie Wilson and others. The interclass rivalry cup went to the seniors with 180 points. certificates were issued for 190 and 38 point scorers.

Lions Hear Memorial Day Address in Myrtle Point

The Myrtle Point Lions Club heard Memorial Day remarks by J. W. McInturf of Marshfield at a Wednesday luncheon in the Jack and Jill Cafe. Circuit Judge Del M. King attended and was praised after his appointment to the local district judgeship. The club formed a July 4 committee and named a nominating panel for the upcoming fiscal year.

Machinery Break Causes Delay At Herald Plant

A Thenotype machine at the Herald plant broke down Tuesday night and remained out of commission Wednesday. To avoid delaying the paper a day, management cut this week to four pages, eliminating much news matter. The delay was described as unavoidable and readers were asked to be understanding.

Eaton Feed Store Opens in Myrtle Point

The Eaton Feed Store on West Spruce Street held a grand opening drawing 176 women and 137 men entered door prize contests. About 5800 children received balloons amidst heavy traffic of roughly one thousand visitors despite stormy weather. Helen Cherem won the women’s prize and A M Cooper won the men’s. Store manager Aaron Wils said the response was astonishing and credited Herald advertising.

Plywood Plant Raises Wages For Six Hundred Workers

Smith Wood Products employees in Coquille received a wage boost announced by George Ulett vice president and manager of Oregon operations. The new minimum is 75 cents per hour plus a paid one week vacation, with sawmill workers getting a 7 percent raise to a 75 cent minimum under AFL union terms.
