State proposes flashing school crossing beacons at Myrtle Point intersections

The Oregon State Highway Department offered to install overhead school crossing signs with flashing yellow beacons at Harris and Spruce streets if Myrtle Point agrees to cover future maintenance and power costs. Officials seek crosswalk placement and a uniform speed zone between Spruce Street, Maple, Myrtle Crest, and the high school area after a child was injured at Highway 42 and Willow Street.

Myrtle Crest 8th Grade Commencement Honors Prominent Singers

Myrtle Crest held its 8th grade commencement with diplomas presented by school board member Mrs. Robert Belloni. The ceremony featured student speakers, musical contributions by the 7th grade band directed by Robert Zimberman, and prayers by Rev. Ben Elliott. Nearby, Myrtle Point police recovered two tires and wheels found abandoned after a stalled car incident across Spruce Street bridge.

Memorial for 14 year old Larry Rogers

The obituary notes Larry Rogers of Powers died after a fall from a 40 foot embankment while fishing. He was taken to Mast hospital and Eugene where he died from a skull fracture. He was born July 24, 1960 in Coos Bay and survived by parents a brother and two sisters along with grandparents and other relatives. Funeral mass held at Powers with Father Michael Fleming officiating and burial in Powers cemetery. city officials also discussed a budget with operating expenses of 228483 compared to 232174 this year with a proposed reduction and new revenues to 2708 per year.

High School Awards Assembly Highlights Page of Honors

Myrtle Point high school held an awards assembly listing department honors for students across agriculture chemistry chorus English foreign language home economics industrial arts journalism mathematics science social science and civic leadership. Notable recognitions included DAR history awards and GAA sportsmanship honors among many typing and pin awards, varsity letters, and band emblems for a large group of students and staff.

Myrtle Point Rotary creates memorial student loan fund

The Myrtle Point Rotary club establishes a memorial fund in memory of Henry A. Schroeder and Tex Billingsley to provide educational loan funds for Myrtle Point high school graduates. Donations are welcomed from individuals and organizations for deposit to the student body account under the fund.

Memorial Day Service in Pioneer Park

Memorial Day services will be held for one half hour Sunday in Pioneer Park beginning at am. Cheiss will perform the unknown soldiers tribute, with the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars participating. Rev. John Weed will speak, Rev. Richard Druneen will offer invocations, and Rev. Glen Mayhew will deliver remarks.
