Mrs. Elsie Downing of Myrtle Point was elected state treasurer of the Oregon Business and Professional Women's clubs at the Multnomah Hotel convention held May 15 and 16. She has served as state finance chairman for two years. Miss Cenda Wylie of Coos Bay was chosen to succeed her as finance chairman. The gathering drew 474 delegates, with national president Miss Helen Irwin of Des Moines delivering an inspirational address.
James A. Norman, former Coos county district attorney and Coos Bay lawyer, led Republicans for the state legislature with 1886 votes over Lars Peterson 1132 and Raymond A. Magnuson 915. No opponent in the fall. Rod McKenzie also renominated over Chas H Gray shel with about 2425 to 1500. Democrats field no candidate for the post.
The Active Club bingo party will be held this Thursday at 8 PM at St Anns Catholic guild hall instead of the high school gym. Future sessions will migrate to St Anns on the second and fourth Tuesdays each month.
The merger of Mountain States Power with Pacific Power & Light on May 21 will pool financial and physical resources to serve 285,000 customers. The combined system will operate 347,148 kilowatts of generating capacity and pursue hydroelectric and potential nuclear projects with three neighboring utilities under Atomic Energy Commission signoff. Personnel changes are expected to be minimal, with benefits preserved under the merger.
A large crowd filled the Myrtle Point High School auditorium Sunday evening for the baccalaureate services honoring the graduating class of 1954. The 72 graduates formed a ceremonial procession that thrilled attendees as the ceremony opened.

Governor Paul Patterson won the Oregon Republican primary by about a 3 to 1 margin over Secretary of State Earl Newby and will face Democrat Joseph K. Carson in November. Coos County supported Patterson by 2 to 1, while Harris Ellsworth was unopposed in his congressional bid. Voter turnout appeared light with roughly 4,600 Democrats and 4,000 Republicans casting ballots.

The Water-church Daily Vacation Bible School will run from Tuesday June 1 to Friday June 11 in Myrtle Point with 9 to 11:30 a.m. daily activities for nursery through juniors. Frank Meldrum, local attorney, was elected president of the Myrtle Point Lions Club at last Wednesday’s meeting. Officers include Ritchie Francis as 1st vice president Don Dricoll 2nd vice president Chet Weed 3rd vice president Rev Kay Peterson secretary John Rhoades treasurer Bob Cotton and Dick Johnson tail-twisters Ervin Wilberger Lion tamer and board members Fred Gross and Martin Kincheloe. Installation set for Wednesday evening June 16. Ed Sempert noted 23 members qualified for perfect attendance pins including 15 year pin recipient Ed Roberts. State Lions convention in Coos Bay June 13 14 15 featured in discussion with hoped for strong local representation.
