Hunters Kill Cougar Near Agness in Rogue River Country

Two Myrtle Point residents, Henry Bunch and Yman Chenin, killed a cougar attacking sheep near Agness after a hunt that began when Ernest Snyder reported sighting the animal. A puppy was injured, and the cougar fell from a tree after a head shot. The Powers-Agness road is opening up, with CCC workers grading it and the route to Rogue River expected to improve soon.

Myrtle Point High names Sam Dement top athlete of class of 39

Sam Dement, football, basketball and track letterman, received the Myrtle Point High School Athletic Trophy at a Friday assembly. Alumni athletes funded the cup to honor the senior judged most outstanding in athletics by the principal and coach. Dement led teams to four championships and earned multiple all county honors while also excelling academically.

Fire destroys Dora sawmill in Dora

A fire of unknown origin swept the Smith Bros. saw mill in Dora on Friday, destroying the mill and burning the slab pile. About 20,000 feet of lumber were lost and a nearby logging truck standing by was badly damaged. No one was inside the mill when the blaze was found.

Theatre to Have New Manager Soon

Arthur Hoffman will take over management of the Hiland theatre starting June 1, succeeding Austin G. Dodge who, with his wife and small daughter, will move to Eugene to become district manager for the Equitable Life Assurance Company. Dodge will maintain offices in the Miner building in Eugene and handle related territory duties. Hoffman, Dr R H Maat’s brother in law, brings over ten years of theatre and circuit experience from California, Washington, Oregon, and a recent stint in Portland managing a downtown venue. He once worked with Janet Gaynor early in her career.
