Ardis Stewart, valedictorian, delivered a year end talk on freedom of thought and public maintenance of free expression. She contrasted American and Canadian school systems she attended and concluded with a farewell address on behalf of the graduates. Linn presented awards in Ardis Stewart’s honor.

Two Myrtle Point residents, Henry Bunch and Yman Chenin, killed a cougar attacking sheep near Agness after a hunt that began when Ernest Snyder reported sighting the animal. A puppy was injured, and the cougar fell from a tree after a head shot. The Powers-Agness road is opening up, with CCC workers grading it and the route to Rogue River expected to improve soon.

Sam Dement, football, basketball and track letterman, received the Myrtle Point High School Athletic Trophy at a Friday assembly. Alumni athletes funded the cup to honor the senior judged most outstanding in athletics by the principal and coach. Dement led teams to four championships and earned multiple all county honors while also excelling academically.

Fransen sues Fete Lunde and Rose Logging for injunction over use of a right of way and damages claimed for alleged overuse of a 1,000 foot road for hauling logs near Kentuck slough. plaintiffs seek 1,000 damages, 150 attorney fees, and 250 on appeal.
A fire of unknown origin swept the Smith Bros. saw mill in Dora on Friday, destroying the mill and burning the slab pile. About 20,000 feet of lumber were lost and a nearby logging truck standing by was badly damaged. No one was inside the mill when the blaze was found.
Arthur Hoffman will take over management of the Hiland theatre starting June 1, succeeding Austin G. Dodge who, with his wife and small daughter, will move to Eugene to become district manager for the Equitable Life Assurance Company. Dodge will maintain offices in the Miner building in Eugene and handle related territory duties. Hoffman, Dr R H Maat’s brother in law, brings over ten years of theatre and circuit experience from California, Washington, Oregon, and a recent stint in Portland managing a downtown venue. He once worked with Janet Gaynor early in her career.

The Coos County Firemen's Association met at City Hall in Marshfield with Rynehers BB Retina and Terry Schrunk of Portland speaking on a proposed volunteer firefighters bill. The measure would create a state fund in the treasury to support municipal fire services and set limits on volunteer membership.
The county Democratic sheriff nominee Sheriff Williams defeats Lavi Bunch on the Republican ticket while Broadbent rancher EBL Clawen runs against incumbent R. H. Lawhorn who was unopposed in the Democratic field. In the governor race Oragon tops Charles H. Martin with Sprague as the Republican rival. Mahoney leads Democrats for U S senator. Holman leads Republicans in Coos. Mott tops Norval for representative. Burke wins the Democrat slot. The vote suggests a close general election with strong party competition.

Paul Davis, a longtime Myrtle Point meat dealer, takes over the City Meat Market from Fritz Hull who plans to leave for San Francisco. Davis returns from Los Angeles and brings to the store the reputation of handling Dement white faced beef and other premium meats, with Dale Haworth assisting and a client base built on local trust.
The Townsend club met at the r one hall Sunday with President H M MacLean leading the program after the business session. N E Bord and Mrs O T Clark presided. Bond performed two original songs as part of the program amid a tally of members and notes on the drive across the county.
