In the Ozarks hill country locals view Vice President Nixon as a prairie “dude” until he appears in person. They recall his first visit to South America with curiosity about his demeanor and reception, noting a shift when he speaks and moves. Continued on Page Seven.
Seventy six students of Myrtle Point High will receive diplomas at the commencement in the new high school gym Thursday evening May 29. The class of 1958 compares with 40 in 1957, with 40 boys and 36 girls. Girls win 15 honor roll spots and hold valedictorian and salutatorian honors Paula Lancaster is valedictorian and Judith Starr among top scholars.
City council backs a youth summer recreation program after a detailed Recreational Committee report. Harold Rushin chairs, urging Jack Orr to be retained as recreation director. The body also approves town housing and safety measures as part of a continued agenda.
Local businessman Ham Thrift told the Chamber of Commerce that Myrtle Point could host an air strip near the planned Highway 42 route. He outlined a landing area where the road from Spruce Street to the Norfolk bridge would end, creating an ideal aviation site with the bridge area included.
The Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club hosts the Spring Handicap final between 15-year-old Jim Thomas and veteran Erv Dettman. Dettman carries a 9 handicap, while Thomas tees off with 24, giving Thomas a 15-stroke head start.
Residents are urged to attend the Broadbent TV Translator meeting at Myrtle Point City Hall next Friday evening at 8.0 o clock. The session offers to answer any questions about television and is open to all interested locals.

The Lee Ray Post 2923 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will sponsor a poppy sale in Myrtle Point on Friday and Saturday May 23 and 24. Adjutant Gus Metzgus notes the post provided $200 in relief to veterans and families last winter and appeals for support to strengthen the relief fund this coming winter.

In a high profile GOP primary upset Oregon Secretary of State Mark Hatfield swamped state Treasurer Sig Unander for the governor nomination. Hatfield drew about 105000 votes to Unander’s 65000 as late returns lagged. Unander conceded Friday night after Hatfield’s lead proved insurmountable. Holme swept aside ex State Senator Lew Wallace as his nearest rival.
In Coos County from Friday's primary, Walter Barklow won the Democratic nomination for county commissioner over Bob Geaney 3202 to 3102, while Ernest Payne captured the Republican nomination 1622 to Raleigh Greene 1508. Chas e Strawn edged Howard Marsh for sheriff. Strawn 2505, Marsh 2183, Huelshoff 1682, Dieu 251. Barklow is a Myrtle Point real estate man. Geaney farms near Coquille. Readers are invited to submit parade theme ideas tying into Oregon's Centennial by June 10. The Coos County Fair Board will select a winner to name the theme and win free gate and grandstand passes for the family.

The Georgia Pacific company will boost log trucking from its Bone Mountain camp southeast of Remote. Dozens of trucks now operate daily on Highway 42 to Co Ne and Roseburg. A summer schedule targets 400 loads daily, per company officials.
Voters in Precinct 54 cast 81 write in ballots for Joe Laird as precinct committee man, all Democratic. Despite ballot absence, his name drew more votes than any Democrat on the ticket and nearly matched top Republicans like Brewer Mills who had 82 for coroner. Clarence Barton led city totals with 215, followed by Chas Porter 213 and Guv Holmes 188. Red Neuman led Republicans with 196 as Barton’s general election opponent.
State Highway Commission calls for a public hearing on the Highway 42 improvement with $600000 in funds. Hearing requests must be mailed to Myrtle Point City Council by June 2, 1958. Work is set to begin July 1 near North Fork bridge and Eighth and Ash streets west of the Odd Fellows hall.
The State Highway Commission announced at its May 5 meeting a contract to Woodward Barklow of Coquille for 679.00 to pave a 0.42 mile stretch on Fourth Avenue in Powers Oregon with stone base and laying.
