Elks Youth Leadership contest winners announced at banquet

Richard Anderson announced winners in the Elks Youth Leadership and Free Throw contests at a banquet. Michael Adams Myrtle Point and Susan McCarthy Coquille led first place student and girl categories. Karen McCarthy Coquille placed second in state and won $500 while Greg McMair Coquille won free throw first prize.

Welfare Work Programs Change in Coos County

Coos County Welfare Administrator A M Hillstrom reports federal law changes shift some work and training programs to the State Employment Service. In January 1968 Coos County aided 715 Public Assistance cases across ADC, OAA, GA, and blindness and disability aid, with limited employable or trainable cases. Local agencies participating included Coos Bay and North Bend libraries, County Highway, Vocational Rehabilitation, Oregon Forestry, Southwestern Oregon Community College, and others.

City Court Punishments For Several Traffic Violations

Gary Bryant jailed in a public intoxication case and fined 60 dollars. Rodger Tomfohr fined 925 dollars for violation of basic rule. Jerry Smith fined 10 dollars for basic rule violation. Deans Stewart fined 15 dollars for excessive niece offense. Barbara Jolly given a court warning for stop sign violation. Charles Mall Jr fined 15 dollars for stop sign violation.

Myrtle Point High Names 1968 I Dare You Awardees

Myrtle Point High School honors Carol Brister and Mike Adams with the I Dare You award for high character and leadership. They will also receive Wm H Danforth's I Dare You and participate in the graduation presentation of multiple recognitions.

Local Student Wins Reader's Digest Award

Brister, valedictorian at Myrtle Point High School, received the annual Reader's Digest Association Award for students showing leadership potential in the community. She will get an honorary one year subscription in a language edition of her choice and a personal certificate from the editors. The awards are given to high school valedictorians nationwide.

Antique Car Show Sponsored by Myrtle Point Chamber

The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual antique car show on Saturday June 29. Three blocks of the business district will be roped off and space set aside for the display and related activities.

Judge Belloni Rules In Favor Of G P

Judge Belloni ruled that under the 1934 agreement Coos Bay Lumber Company must convey cutover lands to the government once timber harvesting and disposal were complete. The court found Public Land Order 1610 retraced the northern boundary and ended enforceability, limiting the 1934 document’s effect on the Siskiyou National Forest boundaries. Georgia Pacific had acquired Coos Bay holdings in 1956.

Commission Recommends Zoning Change For Mobile Homes

The Planning Commission urged the city council to permit mobile homes as residences in a new zone. Proposals require homes at least eight feet wide and forty feet long and to meet current building codes for electricity water and sewer connections.
