Myrtle Point chamber of commerce and Lions club urged removal or improvement of a dilapidated Maple Street building blocking views. They condemned the structure as an eyesore ahead of tourist season and planned attendance at a Pacific Highway Lodge event with officials from several nations invited.
Garden club members heard a paper on garden pests by Mrs. Handerson and Mrs. Campbell and a talk on May gardening by A M Cooper. The group announced the annual rove show for July 11 with Cooper in charge and roses on the next program. The club urges owners to improve vacant lots to boost Myrtle Point for visitors.
The American Legion plans Memorial Day observances at Union High School. The day kicks off at ten with a program then moves to local cemeteries for graveside services. A notable speaker will be announced. two G A R K members will participate. May include Hiram Hatcher who is recovering and hopes to attend. All fraternal civic or military groups and citizens are invited.
Miss Wilda Clark, a Gaylord High School senior, was honored at a surprise kitchen shower at the Holy Boten home. The event featured a mock wedding with Carey Benes as bride and Lyle Carver as groom. Guests arrived with onion and radish bouquets and shared refreshments.
Members of the Cops and Curry fair board met in North Bend to finalize plans for the September fair. President EF S Dement led the session with L H Pearce recording minutes. Attending were EF Dement Myrtle Point officials P O Lund and R A McNair Bandon Joe Larson Marshfield Albert Powers Powers County Agent George Jenkins and Jensvinth. The board reviewed amusements concessions and a racing program, while horse entries were still undecided.
Harold James and family and Mrs. Dwight Culver with children traveled from Bridge to Portland and Canby then returned. Harold James plans to enter a veterans hospital in Portland for about two weeks. Albert Hart and family will move to Astoria to manage an apartment house, with friends’ good wishes.
Fishing reports show improvement with several nice catches. Slim Ireland landed 12 to 16 inch trout on Rock Creek, while Floyd Summers and others brought in 87 fish near Myrtle Creek. Elton Schroeder and Raleigh Green reported 62 fish from Floras Creek in two days, with lengths up to 16 inches.
An Ellison White Chautauqua advance agent spoke at Rev E V Ostrander's home in Myrtle Point. The program begins June 8 and runs five days featuring three plays that excite the local audience.
A student committee seeks season ticket sales for three dollars to fund next year's football and basketball programs. Tickets cover all home games and will be available in September. Proceeds from this year's three plays funded athletics. uniforms are worn out and require substantial expense.
A fire at the McCracken logging camp on Halls Creek Friday afternoon damaged a block yard. The blaze destroyed 70,000 feet of logs and the spar pole before crews brought it under control. The origin is believed to be in one block but cause remains undetermined.
Coquille Oregon May 14 directors of Fat Elk Oil and Gas Company plan a mass meeting in the Coquille Community building Tuesday at 8 p m. Public invited to hear about oil and gas production in Coos county with speakers including mayors from Marshfield North Bend Coquille Myrtle Point and Bandon plus county officials.
Four students will graduate from Arago High School this year. They are Harry Collier Lyle Paull Georgia Deardorff and Hildreth Hill. Georgia Deardorff will deliver the valedictory and Hildreth Hill the class will. The commencement address will be by Dean Duback of O S C on May 28 in the high school auditorium.
Stanford claimed its eighth consecutive win over California as Kenneth Churchill set a national intercollegiate record with a 220 feet 0 inch spear throw. The prior mark of 217 feet 7 inches was set two weeks earlier at Berkeley against Washington. Churchill also holds the Intercollegiate AAAA record of 212 feet 5 inches from Cambridge, Mass.
Art Fish of Myrtle Point is appointed deputy state game warden in eastern district. The move follows a department shakeup under Governor Meyer's administration, with several veteran officials removed and Fish recognized for his long service as a chief enforcement officer.
A fire at the William Richardson place in Gaylord Friday night destroyed seven garages and seven cars used by Mike Morrison camp employees. Cars, all idle that day, were not saved as the blaze spread before discovery. Owners named include Ted Sdulkey J D Sherman John Warner Millard Carlisle Claude Randleman and M Parrish with one owner unnamed. Insurance on several had lapsed notes.
Warm weather for a week has drawn many residents to stream water for swimming. The activity remains a favored outdoor sport as locals enjoy the water much earlier in the year than usual.
The Myrtle Gold creamery issued patron checks stating fat was paid at 380 cents per pound for April. The move marks payment adjustments for fat content during the month.
Marshfield Royal Neighbors hosted a full day session with guests including Ira Hamblin state officer Ida Ho and Anna Stall amith district deputy. Officers elected for next year include Ada Lemon president Eva Hazelwood vice president and Gladys Evans secretary treasurer.

Mike Maloney III former publisher of the Coos Bay paper moved to a San Francisco hospital after a fall that sprained his ankle. The report notes his nerves were shocked and his condition is described as frail. his career included roles with the Des Moines Register and Santa Ana Daily Times.
J Fay, arriving from Burns Oregon, closed a deal to purchase the old Carl Place of 8 acres on the Widdlest above Hoffman bridge. The Ice Fork Boom Company owned the property. The transaction was arranged through Wellman and Ra.
Robert Clarke son of Dr and Mrs O H Clarke attended school in New York and led his team in a dual track meet against Troy Conference Academy on May 2. He won the 100 yard dash in 10.4 seconds and the 220 yard dash, tied for first in the pole vault at 9 ft 6 in, and his relay team finished fourth.
