Valedictorian and salutatorian named for MPH 1972

Waterman and Abel head Myrtle Point High School’s 1972 graduating class as valedictorian and salutatorian. Yvonne Waterman earned a 3.07 GPA and Susanne Abel a 3.91. Waterman held NHS, Quill and Scroll, Franco German Club secretary, GAA vice president, co editor of the yearbook, and student body treasurer. Abel excelled in 4H and Elk leadership, won Elk Leadership Contest and was Betty Crocker Namemaker of the Year. Susanne Abel active in GAA, NMS, French Club, Quill and Scroll, and served as student council and class officers. she won the chemistry award.

Betsy Hartless Wins State 4-H Recognition

Betsy Hartless, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Menegat of Arago Route Myrtle Point, earns state 4-H recognition for outstanding sheep project work since 1965. She will receive a savings bond from Wilson and Co and may be submitted for national honors next fall.

Moon Enters Coos County Assessor Race as Write-In Candidate

Moon Wolmey R Moon an appraiser with the Coos County assessor offices announced his candidacy for the assessor post to be vacated by F Flanages. Too late for the ballot a write-in campaign will seek nomination in the upcoming primary. Moon a Republican native Oregonian lived in Barview Coos Bay and now resides in Bridge with wife Marietta and children Lorie Leslie and son Moon. Born in Eugene he became a state certified appraiser and has served on the assessor’s staff for years.

Weaver urges GP to give railroad to Powers

In a Public Utility Commission hearing in Coquille last week James Weaver urged Georgia Pacific to donate the 18 mile Powers to Myrtle Point line to the City of Powers. He argued GP gutted Powers timber supply and harmed jobs and urged granting a delay on abandonment until GP line and Highway 8 issues are addressed.

District 41 Sets Second Vote On Tax Levy

The proposed 1978 73 School District 41 tax plan seeks expenditures of 9866 206.19 and faces a second vote. District 41 voters will decide again on May 2 after a May 1 election produced a 66 vote margin.
