Mayor Rose Pinkley proclaims May 13 as Clean Up Paint Up Fix Up Week in Myrtle Point. City crews will pick up yard debris stacked in parking strips and haul it free. Lions Club will collect household items for the white elephant sale. call Jim Myers to donate.
The Myrtle Point Methodist church secured a 35000 loan from the national board of Methodist missions in Philadelphia for a new education wing. Razing of the former parsonage begins May 15 with mid June start for construction. Roy Erichsen & Associates of Coos Bay handles final plans awaiting church approval on June 2.
Voters approved several school and area budgets in District 41 with narrow margins. Dr. E R Gurney won a seat on the district 41 school board with 271 votes, while Hollis Mast was re elected with 359 votes. Broadbent voted no on county and area budgets, and Arago Sitkum totals were incomplete due to flood conditions. Myrtle Point backed the county budget 306 to 304 and approved the college budget 3223 to 201. The Southwestern Oregon Area Education district budget failed 1047 to 1148 district wide, and Richard Hanen was elected to the college district board.
Heavy rainfall from May 4 to May 6 causes multiple slides on Highway 42 east of Myrtle Point. A slide blocked about 200 feet of road near Powers junction and another 150 feet near Bridge. Detours were set as the river crest reached 30.5 feet by Monday midnight. Rain totals for the storm measured 4.12 inches with monthly totals listed by Clarence Ralph.
The MPHS chorus directed by Miss Rosemary Kronquister will join about 1,100 students at the Southwestern Oregon vocal music festival on Saturday May 11 at 7 p.m. in the Marshfield High School gym. Guest conductor is world renowned composer Jes ter Hairston, a choral director and goodwill envoy for the U S State Department. Hairston toured Europe in 1961 and will return this summer.
The Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club opens its annual tournament this week with rounds from Monday May 18 to Sunday May 19. George Linn, the tournament chairman, says entries are being accepted and handicaps will determine matchups. Jack McLarrin at the pro shop will assign opponents for week one.
The Delage concert scheduled for May 16 has been rescheduled to May 19. Local organizers urge ticket holders to note the new date and verify times and venue.
Elwin Dishner of Reeds ford road was seriously hurt in a head-on collision seven miles east of Myrtle Point on a concrete bridge. Stephen Parrish of Medford, 23, was westbound. Dishner, 19, was eastbound. Dishner was transported to Mast hospital with a broken jaw, leg, arm, and facial cuts.
Severe rain and flooding halted normal bus routes in School District 41. The Norway to Lee Valley bus returned around 11 a.m. while the Catching school bus did not reach Point on Monday. Dora and Sitkum Schools stayed open all day, Myrtle Point operated for most students except district bus riders.
The Myrtle Point VFW announces plans to purchase a lot at the corner of 6th and Willow for a new building this week. Commander Gus Metagus leads the project as sergeant at arms oversees the transaction.
A student art exhibit from kindergarten through high school will be shown in Spruce Street School District office May 13 to 17. Richard Payne, high school art teacher, announced the event and noted crafts from arts and crafts classes will also be displayed. All interested persons are invited to view the work in the school office.
First grade pre-registration is set for Friday May 17 in primary schools. New parent handbooks will be distributed. Census figures show 151 first graders in District 41 schools next fall. The district will cover first grader physical examinations to be conducted at schools, with the exam date to be announced later.
Myrtle Point science students earned an honorable mention at the Northwest regional science fair in Portland. They sent their exhibit to the Portland event after preparing it locally.
A ceremony launched the Bear Creek camp under BLM supervision with $109,000 from a Public Works Act allocation. Ellon Schroeder led Myrtle Point Chamber efforts joined by Winston Chamber of Commerce and BLM officials. The project includes a swimming area, foot bridge, restrooms, and drinking water facilities.
Myrtle Point finished third in the county track meet behind Marshfield and North Bend. The team cracked the county record with a 1:33.4 relay time by Reed Gurney Terry Pullen Craig Brown and Dave Hatfield, erasing the 1898 mark of Caudle Knight Grubbe and Hayworth. Coach Grove praised the youth on the squad and noted a promising junior to replace a graduating senior. Dave Hatfield also won the team’s sole other first.
Myrtle Point Church of the Nazarene schedules the dedication of its new 40 by 60 foot educational unit for Sunday May 12 at 7 30 p m Dr W H Lewis general superintendent will deliver the dedicatory message Lloyd F Pounds serves as pastor The church traces its origins to 1900 with organization in 1908 and notes a late construction phase beginning in 1968 under Reverend Licya F Pounds The current membership stands at 31 with Sunday School attendance peaking at 75 reaching 16 initial pupils and steady growth noted through the years.
Myrtle Crest dominates six meets with an average 142 points while coaching staff led by Maurice Middleton drills in rain and mud. Bruce Thrower and Rea King headline new marks in hurdles and 300 and 408 yard runs as the team eyes the north Bend district meet.
Gold Beach beat Myrtle Point twice 11-6 and 7-5 to drop MP to 0-3 in Sunset conference baseball. MP defense and timely Gold Beach hitting, aided by slick, muddy field, produced 12 MP errors. Al Memegat went 1-2 with four walks for MP.
