George Hall editor of The Herald is a candidate for delegate to the GOP convention. The note praises his patriotism and honesty, noting his column Knockin Around and editorial courage, and urges voters at the May 16 primary to send him to the National Convention.

Myrtle Point volunteers for the blood donor drive urge residents to register. Local registrar Della Belloni will host a registration stand at Security Bank on Saturday from 10 am, aiming to reach 350 more donors while only 50 registered so far. The bloodmobile visits May 15, with 400 to 500 donors desired.
Mothers Day service at the First Presbyterian Church will feature a special sermon by Dr A Theodore Smith and a gift to every mother present in memory of the occasion. The eleven o clock service will include special music and recognition of the mother with the most children.
In Coos County the primary features a single Democratic contest for county commissioner between F. J. McDonough and Albin Granstrom. Republican incumbent Fred A. Kruse has no opposition. Democrat Ivan C. Laird faces no challenger for state representative in the sixteenth district. In the seventeenth district Republicans Ed F. Ackley Roderick T. McKenzie and O. H. Bengtson seek the nomination while Democrats have no candidate. For district attorney John M. Eaton runs as a Democrat, while Republicans Raymond A. Magnuson and John Pickett seek the nomination. Republicans list many other candidates and delegates, with continued coverage on page seven.
Thousands of fish were salvaged last Thursday as sportsmen, aided by six state game commission members, worked near the Fox bridge on the North Fork con river. Local participants included Tom Forrest, Austin Dodge, Irvin Wilberger, Sanford Tripp, Jack Pinkley and Thomas Gilkison.
The Girls League of Myrtle Point High hosted the Second Annual Cinderella Ball turning the gym into a garden in the rain. Royal procession crowned Prince Ross Pinkley and Cinderella Reta Keller with a full court of senior junior and first graders in attendance and performances by students.
A variety show by first and second graders will entertain parents and friends on May 15 at 8:00 p.m. in the Primary gymnasium. The program includes Western Cowboys music and folk dance, a rhythm band, Indians and Negroes, a skit The Magic Garden, and additional attractions from six rooms of first graders.
Arnold Melby Rezig is identified as music director of Myrtle Point schools. He and family plan to stay through summer. The high school band uniforms arrived and will debut at the North Bend Southwest Control meet. The event runs Friday and Saturday.
Bob Hoefs former SOC standout under Jean Eberhardt and Oregon graduate accepts the basketball coach post at Myrtle Point Union High School. He will teach social studies and brings two years of Vernonia Union coaching plus four college seasons at SOC. Hoefs played for the Oregon team at the 1948 A I tournament in Kansas City and served in World War II from 1942 to 1946.
Nationally known young musicians will appear in a Friday night talent show at 8 p.m. Proceeds benefit a community building fund for youngsters. Contestants will be judged by the audience with winners announced by the end of the program.
About 30 men attended a kick off breakfast at the Myrtle Hotel to hear Jerry Burnham discuss the Oregon Trail Council Boy Scouts needs and to launch a fund drive. Captains and organizers named include Jack Dunn, George Linn, Dave Doperalski, and others. funds go to Melvin Zumwalt at Security Bank with Driscoll chairing local efforts.
Oregon anglers welcomed a second trout season starting Saturday May 3 in Rogue and Umpqua regions and eastern Oregon waters. Cascade lakes Odell Crescent Blue and Suttle opened, Wickiup reservoir accessible by road. Eight liberation trucks operate state wide and 725000 yearling trout of 2000000 released this year.
The play features Betts in the lead with Jack Boone and Dick Briggs in major roles. Cast includes Lou Betts and Boone alongside students from the area in a theater production to be staged next week.
Early Sunday fire gutted the McClellan sawmill at First and Maple beside the Southern Pacific depot. Loss estimated at 160000 with 50000 in new equipment. No insurance due to high premium. Mill workers face layoffs as the city weighs rebuilding.
