Powers Auxiliary Plans Poppy Sales
The American Legion Auxiliary unit 83 organizes the annual Poppy Day sale for memorial poppies on May 24. Mra Orvil Knight is president and Mra Ray Wyland is Poppy Sale chairman. Disabled veterans from both wars, numbering 12,4838, were employed to make poppies. more than 125,000 women are needed to distribute them. All volunteers, income last year totaled 321,87911 dollars for disabled veterans, their families, and families of the deceased.

Murphy Store Sold At Bridge Landmark Change
Mr and Mrs George A Rice sold their Murphy general store at Bridge to Frank Schram of Coquille. The new owner will take possession May 8. The Murphys ran the business since 1911 through Mrs Rice and daughter Helen, later with Helen's husband Mr Rice. The couple will remain in Bridge, saying they are not retired, just tired.

Posthumous Silver Star for Corporal Brooks on Okinawa
Corproal Olon E B Brooks Jr USMC posthumously receives the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry on Okinawa April 20 1945. The award and citation to his Myrtle Point parents include letters from General Vandergrift and Captain Sullivan. Brooks also earned the Purple Heart.

Members of the Coos County Marks association, Inc subscribed funds in 1945 to buy a truck and trailer for hauling livestock to market. They will receive a check with interest to May 1, as board action approved at a meeting in Coquille on April 28. Walter Tripp of Myrtle Point bought the truck and trailer last year and will operate it for hauling livestock and other farm commodities. R. H. Christensen was re elected president and Leland Peterson secretary treasurer. The group will remain intact and work for better marketing conditions rather than actively hauling livestock.

Union High Band Gains Ground at Ashland Festival
A regional high school music festival in Ashland attracted about thirteen hundred students from Medford Central Point Glendale Myrtle Point Ashland Coquille Grants Pass Jacksonville Lakeview North Bend Phoenix Rogue River and Reseburg Talents included the Union High band which earned two plus B and two B’s and a minus B for instrumentation and three A’s for deportment Judges urged increased instrumentation and hard work to reach a higher standard Guest conductors included Chester R Duncan George Boughton and Conrad Landing Outstanding massed performances featured a combined girls chorus band and orchestra in one gym setting with performers seating themselves on stage hosts were Dr Elmo Stevenson Glenn Matthews and Wallace B Sapp of Southern Oregon college.

John Harris Die in Woods Accident Near Hawkins Mill
Joan Harris employed at Hawkins mill on Athena creek was fatally injured Tuesday afternoon while working in the woods. John Harris died at Mast hospital after being crushed about the chest and having both legs broken. He is survived by his wife Louise and brother Charles. A long time resident, he lived with his father the late Ida Harris on Fifth and Cathcart. Funeral services set for Saturday at Schroeder chapel with interment in Myrtle Point cemetery.
