The Herald installs a new Linotype from Mergenthaler to produce clearer readable text. It compares old and new type on page four showing improved legibility and increased production. The upgrade, aided by agent A R Bowen, marks the paper as one of the finest in the region.
Tragic death of Karl Kampfer by accidental suffocation in a burning home prompts a deputy coroner inquest. Karl Kampfer born January 9 1883 leaves son Chase and brother Fred. funeral at Schroeder Funeral Home with burial at Norway cemetery. Also noted is the sudden death of Henry Krieck at Janesville Wisconsin aged 71.
Troop 19 prepares a father and son banquet with each patrol handling a part of the entertainment. Tickets are available from any Scout. Monday's meeting was the first attended by the Scout Master in a month, with Mr Kelly and Bob Giles visiting. Jack Willey’s transfer came from Corvallis troop.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer presents The Beast of the City a dramatic city life drama detailing the clash between Haas underworld political machines and police. The cross section of metropolitan politics and law enforcement highlights obstacles faced by honest officers in a corrupt system.
A dance recital presented by Miss Knappes classes in Schroeder Hall occurs April Bth at 8 00 PM. The program includes Avith Hayes Smites Ruth Gougeen India hotty Seale Harriet McKay Singh Jug Twila Post and others with acts in Acrobatic Tap Waltz Clog and Military Tap. Directed by Hazel Knapp with music by Thelma Snyder and photography by N E Bond.
Wm Plummer and Edd Finley of Coquille recovering well after hernia operations on the same day. Mrs Wilson from an appendix operation is improving and expected to be able to go home. Several others including mark shelly and Joro Ivfferson’s party show gradual improvement after recent procedures.
Miss Donald daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Donald of Broadbent narrowly escaped injury when she failed to clear a bridge. The Muff mat bridge misread as Muff Mat bridge caused the mishap as the steering gear was faulty. The car was towed to Pearies garage for repairs.
Miss Sarah Gibbs recovering from influenza plans to return to high school. Johnny Carman, son of Mr and Mrs Clinton Carman, will visit for a week with his parents. E W Jones of Marshfield and Millard Carlyle and family from Cottage Carnie are mentioned as visitors to the district.
Mr Winkleman drove off a grade into a ditch near Powers last Saturday night. He suffered no injuries and the car, after being righted, was found undamaged. Due to low oil, Pearces Garage towed it to Myrtle Point for replenishment Sunday morning.
Starting last Friday March 28th the Pacific Greyhound Lines relinquished a mail contract portion to Central Transfer Co of Bandon handling all mail from Marshfield to Myrtle Point and Powers. Formerly Liggett Bros served Myrtle Point to Powers and Greyhound Lines continue to carry first class mail between Marsh Meld and Roseburg with no schedule changes.
Ralph Kring sells his ranch to Alta E. Robinson of California after a month here. Robinson moves into his new Myrtle Point home and plans to convert it into a chicken and dairy ranch. W A Wellman handled the deal.
The Myrtle Point Chamber of Commerce board approved sponsoring a Feather and Son banquet for the local Boy Scouts. It will be held Tuesday April 5 at the Presbyterian church, organized with the Precobyterian Ladies Aid. Tickets are available from any Boy Scout.
The Elgin Social Club of the Eastern Star presents The Belle of Philadelphia Town a colonial comedy in four acts at Union High School auditorium at 8 00 PM on Friday April 8 Miss Beat rice Ann Blythe stars as the belle of Philadelphia town in 1730 with a romance involving a young American tavern keeper and a bethrothed English suitor The play forms the central thread of the production with period charm and humor
Mrs Allen M Brower bride recently showered with gifts at a kitchen shower in Ashland Oregon following her wedding. Mr and Mrs Brower now reside at 143 Fourth Street.
Jimmy Bryne and Leo Lomski reach a fight arrangement at Marsfield on Thursday April 7. Bryne’s manager accuses Lomski of dodging the bout and says the plan is to keep rounds to six or fewer. Edd Broin, Bryne’s manager, vows a quick finish.
More than twenty new Ford models shown at the Portland gathering of dealers and salesmen from Grove Southern Washington and nearby regions. Prices range from 460 to 050 for the V eight and the four cylinder Job will sell for 90 less than the eight. Henry Ford notes the price gap favors low priced cars and plans wider rural display as models are released by major dealers.
Multiple churches announce Sunday services with times for Bible school worship and special sermons. Methorrist Church lists morning and evening services with a theme on divided personality and a district superintendent guest. Assembly of God and Presbyterian Church add evangelistic meetings and communion, while Church of Christ provides regular Bible school and evening prayer.
A buyer traveling through Myrtle Point today offered 1425 dollars per thousand on the cars, signaling a price rise for ties.
The Woman's Club met at City Hall on March 28 voting twenty five dollars for the library and considering a study club with Mrs Ranton and Mrs Huling to propose a course. A county Womans Club convention will meet at Myrtle Point April 21 with committees named for reception tea and decorations. The afternoon program featured Past Presidents, music by Robert Burns interpretations, a monologue by Mrs Merwin Moller, and a talk on electrical appliances by Mrs Salada with kitchen demonstrations.
At 800 PM last Friday a barn owned by H Red Hanshaw at Big Creek burned completely. No one was on the property as Hanshaw had left for Bear Creek. The total loss was about 800 dollars and was insured.
The Myrtle Point Lions met at a district convention in Roseburg on Wednesday night with eight members from town including Charles HarocKeer Po fund Elton Schroeder Herman Tedsen Karl Kauffman Dr Summerlin Jesse Clinton and Wallace Dement. District Governor Walker attended from Springfield along with a large delegation from clubs in the upper Willamette and Umpqua valleys.
A morning ceremony at Rev. and Mrs. Louis Root’s home in Stringtown united Miss Gladys Bushnell Mare and Everett Barklow of broad community ties. Attendants included John Whobrey and Miss Wilson with Myrtle Point connections. The couple plans to reside at the Barklow ranch with Everett helping his father.
Spruce street merchant Ernie Norris has started a new side line nursing baby rabbits. A young rabbit produced six offspring before an acidic dog killed two or three days later. Norris now handfeeds the fragile kits with an eye dropper and plans more handfeeding in the near future.
Sheriff arrests two cast members delaying a local play by the Elgin Social club, now scheduled for a week earlier. Dr O H Clarke and W A Wellman served subpoenas to appear in the trial of Frank Kellar or the Empire Holding Company in Dallas Oregon set to begin April 1st. The case centers on an alleged three quarters of a million dollar swindle involving ex judge Coshow and ex secretary of state Kozer.
Mrs Donald Gibbs entered the hospital for medical treatment late last week and shows improvement. Mrs Glenn Compton of Powers welcomed an eight pound baby boy named Glenn Vernon last Thursday. Gerald Gwillim, 25 years old, of Coquille, was admitted for medical care. Mrs Schroeder’s ambulance brought Nelson recovered from recon work home in Coquille last Friday. W H Taylor of Myrtle Point, a Win Weekly camp worker, injured knee Saturday. Peter Rookard of the Win Weekly logging camp received a bad ax cut on the foot Saturday. Dickie Emery, nine, son of Bud Emery, broke his arm while playing on a swing Sunday. Mrs James Hobson is hospitalized since Sunday for treatment. Louis Williams had trays taken Monday revealing a broken right jaw and linear fracture near the right temple. he is improving. Mrs Helen Endicott was discharged Tuesday after surgery last week. Mrs Wm Gurney had chest surgery for pleurisy and effusion from flu and is resting. Mrs B Van Fossen was moved home Wednesday and is improving rapidly.
A large crowd attended the Broadbent 4 H Achievement program held in the schoolhouse Friday evening with a model meeting including business, songs, yells and demonstrations. The Broadbent band plans a future play as part of club and school activities.
Passing motorists stop to view an unusual display of cougar carcasses along the highway in front of the Ed Joyce ranch in Camas Valley. John Stanley reports goats lost to the cougar menace and describes the scene.
