Big Addition to be Made to State Pen
The State Emergency Board will meet in Salem on Friday April 4 to consider a deficiency appropriation of 5300000 for a new wing and cell block at the state penitentiary. Plans call for a four tier cell block with 40 cells per tier totaling 160 cells and a capacity for 200 prisoners. The wing is estimated at 8800000 with about 985000 on hand from prior funds. If authorized the block will be a temporary fix while a larger prison plan or a new modern penitentiary is debated, as Superintendent Meyers urges. At present more than 300 prisoners sleep outside cells in basements corridors dormitories and other improvised spaces.
