Chief Bill Tankersley announces a dog control survey in Coos County this Thursday through Saturday to capture loose and unlicensed dogs. Captured dogs go to the Coos Bay pound for five days before potential destruction if unclaimed. Residents with complaints about stray dogs may call 7-3997.
Georgiannan Vaughn, Coos County clerk, reports vacancies on local election boards. She urges interested residents to contact her via post card at the courthouse in Coquille. Open seats include Precinct 54 Myrtle Point two, Precinct 56 Broadbent two, Precinct 57 Bridge two, Precinct 58 Powers one, and Precinct 69 Myrtle Point one.
A Farm and Town Journeys reprint by Carroll P. Streeter argues the farm price crisis stems from higher middlemen costs and lower farmer returns. It details who is hurt, how prices moved since wartime highs, and regional impacts in the Corn Belt and Great Plains with hog and cattle price declines cited.

The Grapevine hints the Spring Handicap may start Sunday April 8 at Coquille Valley Golf and Country Club. Reporter spoke with Bill Downing who urged players to submit handicaps for the tournament as the course, with greens keeper Hewlett, is in fine condition.
Pacific Power and Light plans a 233500 dollar substation and transmission line project in Myrtle Point. Local manager Bill Head says the 20000 volt line will be sectionalized to isolate problems and a 7500 kilowatt substation will be added later this year. Transmission line cost 93000 dollars and the substation about 120000 dollars with completion expected before winter. Distribution circuits will be rebuilt to boost capacity and future growth. The 20000 volt line serving the Powers area will be rebuilt at 15000 dollars to shorten lines and reduce storm damage.
Howard Maples, secretary manager of the Cogs County Chamber of Commerce, outlined his Washington visit to urge selecting Coos Bay for a government naval ammunition depot. He cited meetings with Rep Harris Ellsworth and Senators Neuberger and Morse, who backed the move. He noted Port Chicago’s expansion limits and said Coos Bay offers the necessary rail facilities and land for future expansion.
A post Christmas appeal shows Bay Heat selling a modern refrigerator to aid flood stricken families near children. Mr Banke appeals to Servel regional manager Sew ard Bee for cooperation. Combined efforts of Refrigerator University facilitated the initiative. Continued on back page.
T V Johnson a Myrtle Point resident since 1912 and Coos County since 1887 donated twenty cents to a community pool fund. The aged pioneer, with five great grandchildren Roxanne Dement Danny Dement Rowell Kent and Brinda Perkins as descendants urges others to contribute to the safe supervised pool project alongside the high school plans.
The Myrtle Point Union High School board awarded Todd Building Co. of Roseburg a 424 261 bid for new additions and remodeling. Industrial Building Co. bid 426 820. Funding comes from a 411 000 district hand and a 86 000 five year levy. Furnishings use 25 738 surplus. Project includes gym to cafetorium, extended stage, remodeled dressing rooms, kitchen, and industrial arts shop.
Douglas McKay submits candidacy for U S Senate in Oregon as a Republican, filing in Salem for the May primary to challenge incumbent Wayne Morse. The race centers on McKay’s stance on President Eisenhower’s policies, with long-standing political feuds noted as part of the campaign.
Mermaids of Myrtle Point invite Coos County residents to inspect Spring merchandise stores next Saturday and enter guessing games for valuable prizes. The Herald partners in the promotion offering two or one year subscriptions for correct guesses of Linotype slug counts. Beta Sigma Phi sponsors a free Spring Style Show at Myrtle Point High School Friday at 8 p.m.
Twenty one past masters of Myrtle Lodge No. 78 AP AA M attended the annual Masters meeting at Baldock. State Highway Engineer Baldock will speak at a Coquille highway meeting March 27 at the Coquille Hotel noon. The event is open to the public with attendance confirmation requested.
