A Friday morning wind storm in Myrtle Point reached over 60 mph with higher gusts. A 45 foot trailer owned by Mr and Mrs Ross Robinson on Cemetery road toppled, injuring no one as residents were at work or school. A large tree limb damaged a PP&L line, cutting power downtown for over an hour, roofing torn on Spruce Street, and hats blown from passersby.
The Powers Cruisers, 16-5 in league play, meet Camas Valley Friday at Sutherlin for Bi-county district championship and a state Class B playoff bid. Coach Bob Bushnell predicts a strong effort and a chance to bring home the bacon. Both teams carry 1-1 records in season meetings despite Powers' stronger progress.
E Bennett of Springfield warns Junior Chamber members that apathy toward government risks left wing policies and national debt. He urges JCs to rise, defend the American way of life, and oppose big government in a speech at the annual Bosses Banquet. The Bobcats meet traditional foe Coquilla Red Devils in a Friday basketball double bill at Coquille. Freshmen play at 4:00 with free admission, JV at 6:30 and Varsity to follow. General admission prices apply for all remaining contests.
L J Cooper and A M Hillstrom spoke to the Myrtle Point Rotary Club about Coos county welfare efforts to place welfare recipients in work. Cooper noted 80 000 trees planted and that 85 percent of welfare participants are not permanent dependents, with county forest programs aided by welfare workers.
Harvey Moore of the Coiffure Room in Myrtle Point failed to be present at 2 pm last Saturday when his name, drawn for the Stop and Shop prize, was announced. Moore, not a chamber member, was ineligible yet questioned by a Herald reporter about his absence. Next drawing moves to a $300 grand prize and requires winners to be present at a participating store.
The Myrtle Point City Council announces two street improvement projects Nos 9 and 10 discussed at a recent meeting with 60 property owners present. The projects total an estimated 168000 funded via Bancroft bonding at 6 percent with a 10 year repayment term. A remonstrance petition is circulating to oppose one project.
Coos County Unit of the American Cancer Society holds a 7:30 PM meeting in the Elks club Coos Bay to finalize a countywide screening of the film Time and Two Women. Showings are scheduled March 7 and 8 in Myrtle Point Bandon Coquille and other towns, free to the public.
A Coos County study estimates partial flood control in the Coquille River Valley would boost farm income by about 632000 dollars annually. Benefits include better boating recreation sanitation and municipal water supply, with further gains from diking and drainage improvements and irrigation of additional lands. About 21000 acres flood during heavy rains, with 7000 acres of the lowest lands benefiting most.
A county report estimates flood control and drainage improvements would double irrigation on up to 10 000 acres across 275 farms, yielding a net $2 000 per acre or $200 000 total irrigation benefit and $36 000 annual forage gains from diking. It notes 1955 losses of $2 596 890 and that 40 percent of arable land floods most years.
